Nature of Award

An award, sponsored by the chemistry department’s DSC, is given annually to the tutorial teaching assistant in a second year course who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the education of chemistry students in a tutorial setting. Each award consists of $500 and a framed award certificate.

Nomination Criteria

In order to be eligible for an Award, the TA must be a graduate student at Queen’s University who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the education of undergraduate students enrolled in a chemistry course at Queen’s. TAs are nominated by students enrolled in chemistry courses and/or a professor at Queen’s University. Eligible candidates will be TAs who directly contribute to the learning experience of undergraduate students through leadership of tutorial sessions, or by providing individual student academic assistance. A TA is eligible to receive one Award in any specific academic year.

Nomination Procedure

Nominations will be made in the following way:

• Students will have an opportunity to nominate their TA by completing an online TA nomination form or a written form prepared by the professor in charge of the course for which the graduate student is a TA. This evaluation should contain persuasive and compelling reasons why the TA deserves special recognition. The name of the TA and course taught by the TA must be included in the nomination document.
• Professors who have worked with a TA may also nominate that TA, may write a letter of support for any nominee or may voice their support in a selection committee meeting.

Selection Process

Each of the Awards winners will be determined by a committee consisting of the TA Assignment Committee (TAAC), one graduate representative and the President of the DSC. The Committee will review all nomination packages and determine Award winning Teaching Assistants by taking into consideration all information received from both students and professors. All decisions are final.

Presentation of Award

Winners of this Teaching Award will receive the Department of Chemistry Award for Excellence in Teaching Assistance at the Teaching Assistant Professional Activity Day in September of the following academic year. Each award will consist of a framed certificate presented by the Department of Chemistry and a $500 cash award.

Nature of Award

This award is given by the Graduating Class in Chemistry to recognize a faculty member for their excellence in teaching.

Nomination Criteria

Nominees must have taught members of the current graduating class in any of their four years.

Nomination Procedure

Students in the graduating class submit nominations of faculty to the Chemistry Departmental Student Council.

Selection Process

The nominees are voted on by members of the current graduating class.

Presentation of Award

The winner of the award is presented with a plaque at the Chemistry Banquet in March.

Nature of Award

The award is given annually (in April) to the graduate student who is deemed to have contributed the most to demonstrating in the first year chemistry laboratories. The value of the award is current $500 and was set up to honour the memory of William Patrick "Paddy" Doolan who was a laboratory instructor for many years in the Department of Chemistry. The idea for the award came from several Professors Emeriti in Chemistry who donated the money to establish the award.

Nomination Criteria

The recipient must be a full-time graduate student in the Department of Chemistry who are laboratory demonstrators in the first-year laboratories (CHEM 112, CHEM 116, CHEM 120, and/or CHEM 121).

Nomination Procedure

There are no nominees - see Selection Process.

Selection Process

The recipient of the award is selected from a panel of three; first-year lab coordinator, first-year course coordinator, and the graduate coordinator. The name of the recipient is forwarded to the Head of the Department for her/his approval.

Presentation of Award

The recipient is notified in writing, and is awarded a cheque for $500. The winner's name is published in the Chemistry Newsletter.

This award was formally known as the Varian Teaching Assistant Award.

An award, sponsored by Varian Canada, is given annually to the laboratory teaching assistant in a second year course who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the education of chemistry students in a laboratory setting. Each award consists of $500 and a framed award certificate.

Nature of Award

Each year, the Department of Chemistry of Queen's University shall honor seven teaching assistants who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the education of undergraduate chemistry students of Queen's University.

These awards are presented to Teaching Assistants in the following areas:

1st Year Chemistry TA Awards

Two Awards valued at $500 each, will be awarded to the Laboratory Teaching Assistants in 1st year courses who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the education of chemistry students in FIRST year laboratory chemistry

One award, valued at $500, will be awarded to the Tutorial Teaching Assistant in a 1st year course who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the education of chemistry students in a tutorial setting.

2nd Year Chemistry TA Awards

Two awards, valued at $500 each, will be awarded to Laboratory Teaching Assistants in 2nd year courses who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the education of chemistry students in a laboratory setting.

One award, valued at $500, will be awarded to the Tutorial Teaching Assistant in a 2nd year course who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the education of chemistry students in a tutorial setting.

David Thomas is the President and Chairman of the AXYS Group of Companies.  The AXYS Group of Companies consisting of; AXYS Environmental Consulting, AXYA Analytical Services, AXYS Technologies Inc. and Seastar Chemicals Inc. which specializes in advanced technology products and services.    Mr. Thomas is a member of the Chemical Institute of Canada and he holds a Master of Science from UBC.

Nature of Award

The David Thomas Teaching Assistant Award, valued at $500, will be award to the laboratory Teaching Assistant in 2nd year Synthetic Chemistry who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the education of chemistry students.
