Work surrounding AI and assessing its impact and needs at the university has been progressing over the past year, with Eleftherios Soleas, Special Advisor to the Provost on GenAI, leading oversight and development of resources and initiatives for faculty, staff, and students at Queen’s.

Dr. Soleas is currently inviting community members to sign up for a monthly newsletter that will provide updates on AI at Queen’s, including information on new learning opportunities, resources, events, and other AI developments and initiatives.

“There is a great deal happening with respect to AI at the university, and I would like the community to be involved and informed as we move forward with the development of AI resources and initiatives at Queen’s,” says Dr. Soleas. “Our goal is to ensure folks have the tools and resources they need and to be making decisions about using AI in service of our community, augmenting our people’s capacity, and living our values as an educational institution.”

Over the past year, Dr. Soleas conducted a needs assessment survey and has worked closely with three subcommittees, on teaching and learning, operations, and research and research administration, which report into the broader university advisory body, the AI Nexus. He provided an overview of his work to date at the recent Gen AI Forum through the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL).

The AI website contains information on guiding principles for the responsible use of AI, AI governance and oversight at Queen’s, AI applications approved for use, and AI literacy resources, including seven new videos on various topics. The Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning, has also released several statements on AI and the CTL provides a suite of resources for faculty and instructors.

Over the summer and upcoming year, Dr. Soleas will lead the development of a series of guidelines, frameworks and literacy modules with the AI Nexus. These include Faculty Guidance on Responsible AI Use, Student Guideline Framework, and Foundational AI Literacy Modules. Further community consultation through another needs assessment survey will take place in late summer and fall 2026.
