Providence Care has entered into an agreement with Queen’s University to lease the former Gibson Wing at 340 Union St. until 2027 for the delivery of some specialized in-patient services designed to address a gap in restorative and specialized services for aging, mental health, and rehabilitation.

Known as the Providence Transitional Care Centre (PTCC), the site will feature up to 64 beds. In addition, Providence Care is working closely with Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) which has also announced it will create acute care hospital surge capacity at this site related to the COVID-19 pandemic. This 70-bed Alternate Health Facility will give KHSC added flexibility, including ensuring capacity to support patients whose care must be delivered within its Kingston General Hospital site.

Providence Care is taking the lead on the project, working closely with Queen’s University, to prepare the facility. Both healthcare facilities are targeted to open in 2021.

M. Sullivan & Son Limited is the general contractor for the Providence Care project. They are currently completing facility/equipment maintenance and safety reviews.

M. Sullivan & Son is erecting construction hoarding/fencing this week, along with COVID-19 screening amenities.

Interior demolition on levels 1 and 0 will begin later this week. It is not anticipated that this will create excessive noise or dust.

Contractor and consultant traffic will flow through the Union Street entrance.

Providence Care will endeavor to keep the community informed about its activity at the site.

Queen’s is concurrently engaged in renovating other elements of the former St. Mary's On the Lake property for university administration use. That work is slated to be complete in 2022.
