How to Read Elizabethan Spy Letters! With Emily Montford (Live-Streamed BISC Lecture)

Emily Montford
Bader International Study Centre
Location
Zoom

How did spies communicate in the Tudor period? Can we reveal the secret codes that they used? How did they send their letters undetected? In this lecture, Emily Montford will look at the messages written for covert operations in the sixteenth century, demonstrating how we can decipher encrypted writing and look for clues in the material features of these letters. In using these Tudor spy letters, Emily will demonstrate how we can use surviving documents from the early modern period to understand the culture of secrecy embedded in Elizabethan culture.
