Dr. Ezra Tzfadya studies modern and medieval Jewish and Shia Islamic political theology. For the last 4+ years, he has lead the IU-Bloomington Center for the Study of the Middle East program "Shia Islamic and Jewish Legal Reasoning in Dialogue." His current research centers comparatively on the notions of catastrophe, resistance, and exile in Shia Islamic and Jewish exegesis, theology, philosophy, literature, and cultural memory. He is also presently writing on topics of comparative constitutional law between the Israeli and Iranian legal orders. He completed his dissertation "Theocracy in Shia Islam and Judaism: Studies in Legal Theology " at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, comparing concepts of religious and political leadership in the two traditions. He is also the translator of Islamic Philosophy and the Crisis of Modernity: Leo Strauss's Relationship with al-Fārābī, Avicenna, and Averroes. (Albany: SUNY Press, 2024) and the guest editor of a special issue of the Journal of Jewish Thought and Philosophy (JJTP) on "Jewish Political Theology and the Crises of Contemporary Israel." Dr. Tzfadya has served previously as the Reitman Visiting Professor of Jewish Studies at Rutgers-New Brunswick (2023) and as Iran Policy Fellow Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies ( 2021).
