Recent talks by Daryn Lehoux

Dr. Lehoux gave a talk on the evening of February 12, 2010 on the Antikythera Mechanism for the Royal Astronomical Society Kingston in Stirling Hall.

Dr. Lehoux also recently provided two other talks, one to The Montreal Interuniversity Working Group on the History of Philosophy entitled Of Miracles and Mistaken Theories, and the second to McGill University's Philosophy Department entitled Truth, Coherence, Realism, and why they Matter to the Historian of Science.

2009 Holiday Luncheon

The Classics faculty, staff, graduate students, and friends of the Department gathered again this year to celebrate the holiday season and the end of another successful fall term. Our annual Holiday Luncheon is an opportunity to visit with friends and colleagues and enjoy their company and conversation during this festive time of year. Everyone enjoyed the wonderful selection of fruits, cheeses, sandwiches and breads, as well as a variety of desserts.

Dr. Daryn Lehoux interviewed on the Antikythera Mechanism

Dr. Daryn Lehoux was interviewed a featured guest of Bob McDonald on Quirks and Quarks on CBC (Radio One) and interviewed about the Antikythera Mechanism, a fascinating and complex piece of ancient technology discovered a century ago in the wreckage of a 2000-year-old ship.  With recent advances in imaging technology, researchers can now peer into the inner workings of this device to discover what it was used for.  To hear Dr.

Dr. R. Drew Griffith speaks at the NAC

Drew Griffith was an invited guest speaker recently of the National Arts Centre (English Theatre) in Ottawa, participating in an evening exploring the roots of Western Theatre through a performance of readings and songs (entitled The Ark: The Theatre of Ancient Greece).  A brochure outlining the program is available in the Classics Department's main office, 505 Watson Hall.

Convocation 2009

Congratulations go to all of our graduates leaving with a minor or major in Classical Studies.  Well done!  Our best wishes to each of you with your future studies and occupations.  We look forward to you keeping in touch with us.

And our warmest congratulations are in order for five of our graduate students who have successfully completed their Master of Arts degrees.  Ian Babbitt, Christopher Carswell, Rachael Cullick, Joy Livingston, David Sampson and Sergio Yona are wished the very best with their future studies and plans.

The Annual Smethurst Tree Watering Ceremony

Due to the rainy weather, this year's annual Smethurst tree watering was held indoors in the beautiful Classics lounge in Watson Hall. The Smethurst tree watering is an annual departmental gathering to recognize Eric and Viola Smethurst and the contributions to the department and to the study of Classics by Dr. Eric Smethurst, who taught at Queen's from 1947 to 1980, serving as head of the Department starting in 1961. As always, we wish to thank Sue Kilpatrick and Jenny Hope Simpson for their planning of and delicious contributions to this lovely event.
