FILM 112 Film, Media, and Screen Cultures: Theory and Practice
This course offers an introduction to theoretical and critical approaches to global time-based media, focusing on the theories of film and media. Students will learn to identify an array of interpretive approaches (auteurism, structuralism, psychoanalysis, affect, postcolonialism, reception, algorithmic theory, material cultures) and apply such theories to the analysis of global time-based media. Students will pair these conversations with the process of creation, learning the production and circulation of time based-media in order to strengthen their own creative visual storytelling skills.
NOTE FILM 111 and FILM 112 together, are equivalent to FILM 110.
Film and Media – Major (Arts) – Bachelor of Arts (Honours)
Subject: Administered by the Department of Film and Media. Plan: Consists of 60.00 units as described below. Program: The Plan, alone, or in combination with a Minor in another subject, and with sufficient electives to total 120.00 units ( 114.00 units for students admitted prior to September 2017 ), will lead to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree.
Film and Media – Minor (Arts)
Subject: Administered by the Department of Film and Media. Plan: Consists of 30.00 units as described below. Program: The Plan, in combination with a Major Plan in another subject, and with sufficient electives, will lead to an Honours Bachelors Degree.
Film and Media – General (Arts) – Bachelor of Arts
Subject: Administered by the Department of Film and Media. Plan: Consists of 30.00 units as described below. Program: The Plan, with sufficient electives to total 90.00 units, will lead to a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
Computing and the Creative Arts – Specialization (Arts) – Bachelor of Arts (Honours)
Subject: Administered by the School of Computing in partnership with the Departments of Art History and Art Conservation, Film and Media, and the Dan School of Drama and Music. Plan: Consists of 45.00 core units and 39.00 units in one Sub-Plan, as described below. Program: The Plan, with sufficient electives to total 120.00 units ( 114.00 units for students admitted prior to September 2017 ), will lead to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree.
