Global Development Graduate Student receives Dean’s Excellence Award in Social Justice

Chantel Brayall (MA), a graduate student from the Department of Global Development Studies, received the Dean's Award for her work on Social Justice.

The award was presented by Interim Dean Bob Lemieux at the recent annual Dean's Awards Reception, which honours graduate students from each department in the Faculty of Arts and Science for their academic excellence.

Remembering Yesutor Gbewonyo, DEVS MA 2017

We are deeply saddened to learn of the untimely death of Yesutor Gbewonyo, and share our condolences with her grieving family.

Yesutor was a brilliant, and ebullient student in our MA program. She graduated in 2017 after successfully defending her thesis, “Addressing the Sexuality Educational Needs of Learners with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in Ghanaian Special Schools: Perspective of Parents and Special Educators.” This drew upon a rich tapestry of oral interviews and documentary analysis.

Dr. Susanne Soederberg wins Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Supervision

The School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs (SGSPA) has awarded Dr. Susanne Soederberg, Professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Just and Inclusive Cities, the 2025 Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Supervision. 

The Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Supervision is given annually to two Queen's University faculty members who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to graduate student supervision.

Dr. Soederberg has supervised 30 MSc, 13 PhD, and 6 postdoctoral fellows in her 21 years at Queen's.

Vikas HK receives the Brian Yealland Community Leadership Award

The Department of Global Development Studies congratulates Vikas HK for being one of the 2024/2025 recipients. 

The Brian Yealland Community Leadership Award is presented to students who work with, and encourage, local youth who are experiencing social, behavioral, economic, or other challenges by helping them realize their worth as individuals and their potential to achieve. It was created in honour of Brian Yealland, Chaplain at Queen’s University for 32 years.

Allyson Dafoe (PhD Candidate) recognized as a 2024 Champion for Mental Health

Allyson Dafoe, DEVS PhD candidate and teaching assistant was one of more than 40 Queen’s instructors, teaching assistants, and staff members who were recognized as 2024 Champions for Mental Health for creating supportive learning and campus environments. These champions have been nominated by students across faculties and schools, and in Student Affairs, for showing compassion, encouraging a sense of belonging, inspiring health-promoting behaviours, and promoting student mental well being.

Dr. Marc Epprecht publishes new book, Accidental Queer

Dr. Marc Epprecht has published a new book, titled Accidental Queer, and other essays around critical masculinity studies in Southern Africa and Canada.

Abstract:

Since the 1990s Marc Epprecht has helped lay the groundwork for critical masculinity and African queer studies with such publications as the award-winning Hungochani: The History of a Dissident Sexuality in Southern Africa.
