Queen’s and the University of Havana have partnered for the past 10 years to teach the Cuban Society and Culture course and host visiting scholars and artists. The study abroad course has seen over 300 Queen’s students study in Havana thus far, and will continue thanks to a new agreement signed in Havana during a celebration of the course and partnership in May.
DEVS 306/DEVS 307: Cuban Culture and Society Courses
My QUIP internship with the City of Kingston’s Cultural Heritage Department has taught me a lot about how to transfer my DEVS knowledge into real-life situations. Starting in September of 2017, I began my internship as a Digital Research intern; something you likely would not associate with a DEVS major, however my role soon shifted as I was thrust into conversations surrounding Sir John A. Macdonald and his legacy within Kingston.
Image taken by an undocumented Bangladeshi worker, Manolada to show back muscle stress “This will let the people learn how we live our lives here.” These words from an undocumented Bangladeshi migrant man working in Greece sum up the impetus behind a multi-media social justice project of Photovoice that Dr. Reena Kukreja has been collaborating on with 3 groups of Bangladeshi, Indian, and Pakistani migrant men in Greece. They have been using their cell phones to take photographs, record videos, and narrate their stories about their migrant reality.

The Canadian government suspended visa-processing services at its embassy in Havana. No more visiting Cubans to Canada — unless they can get themselves to another country with a functioning embassy. No more Cuban musicians, no more visiting professors, no more family visits, and no more Cuban students studying in Canadian universities.
DEVS Department Administrator, Barbra Lalonde Brousseau, was presented with the Queen's Special Recognition for Staff Award on Thursday, December 7, 2017. The Special Recognition Award recognizes outstanding outstanding contributions to the learning and working environment at Queen's University.
