Lake Ontario in Charcoal

Most of us spend our academic lives reading and writing, but there are many ways to learn and teach.

This week, students in the new “Living Lake Ontario: From the Local to the Global” course learned how to express their thoughts about the lake with charcoal and paper.

A crash-course from Fine Arts instructor Alejandro Arauz complimented talks from two local artists who spoke about their connection to Lake Ontario and how they use that in their art work.

Dr. David McDonald speaks with Bill Welychka about his Living Lake Ontario course.

Queen’s is located on one of the greatest lakes in the world, but most students have little interaction with it during their time in Kingston. This interview with Professor David McDonald discusses why he developed this course: to introduce students to a range of historical and contemporary issues related to Lake Ontario, from the livelihoods of Indigenous communities to fisheries, urban planning, sewage treatment and artistic engagement with the water.

A truly 100-mile diet!

After learning about safe fish eating in Lake Ontario from Colin Lake of the Ministry of Natural Resources, and then learning about efforts to revitalize fisheries in Akwesasne First Nation from Abraham Francis, the students got a lesson in how to clean fish from Chef Cody Balfour from Hospitality Services at Queen’s, followed by a sampling of freshly caught pike, perch and crappies direct from the lake the day before from Bay Williams Fisheries. A truly 100-mile diet!

Jordan Stark Wins Mitacs Globalink Research Award

DEVS is pleased to announce that PhD candidate Jordan Stark was awarded the Mitacs Globalink Research Award (GRA) – National Research Foundation of South Africa.

This award supports research collaborations between Canada and select partner organizations and eligible countries and regions.

Graduate recipients receive a $6,000 research award to conduct a 12- to 24-week research project in the other country.

This grant will help to fund Jordan’s upcoming fieldwork in South Africa. Congratulations Jordan!
