Applications are open for the Principal’s Teaching and Learning Grants. Nominations for the separate Principal’s Teaching and Learning Awards will open later this fall.

The grants provide funding to develop teaching practices in undergraduate core courses. The awards recognize contributions to teaching and learning across the university.

“I am continually amazed by the creativity and dedication of instructors and educational support professionals at Queen’s,” says Patrick Deane, Principal and Vice-Chancellor. “These grants support innovative approaches teaching and learning, while the awards recognize those who enrich the student learning experience. Together, these programs reflect the importance we place on student learning across the university.”

An information webinar on November 3 from noon to 1 p.m. will explain both programs and offer guidance on preparing applications and nominations. All prospective grant applicants and award nominators are encouraged to register. 

Principal’s Teaching and Learning Grants

Launched by the Office of the Principal and stewarded by the Centre for Teaching and Learning, the grants support the development of innovative, values-driven teaching practices in new or existing undergraduate core courses. Successful applicants receive one-time funding of $2,500 to $10,000 to support teaching approaches that advance the university’s strategic priorities and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Now in their second year, the grants build on a round that supported five courses across a range of disciplines.

Application details are available on the Centre for Teaching and Learning website. Applications are due by Nov. 30, 2026.

Principal’s Teaching and Learning Awards

Coordinated with campus partners, the awards highlight exemplary teaching across disciplines. Like the grants, they focus on the university’s strategic priorities and the UN SDGs.  

Award categories include:

• Indigenous Education Award in partnership with the Office of Indigenous Initiatives
• Alumni Award for Engaging Students as Partners in Learning in partnership with the Queen’s University Alumni Association (QUAA)
• Educational Leadership Award in partnership with the Centre for Teaching and Learning
• Educational Innovation and Technology Award in partnership with Information Technology Services
• Globally Engaged Education Innovation Award in partnership with the Office of the Vice-Provost (Global Engagement)
• Promoting Student Inquiry Teaching Award in partnership with Queen's Library

Students, staff, faculty, and alumni may submit nominations for the awards from Oct. 26, 2026, through Jan. 25, 2027. Nomination details are available on the Principal’s Office website. Recipients will be recognized at the university-wide teaching awards celebration.
