Tap-Enabled Student Card Replacement Program Launches
January 30, 2026
Share
Queen’s is distributing new tap-enabled student cards to a group of students over the winter term. Approximately 14,000 students will exchange older, stickered cards for a new tap-enabled card as part of this program. Students who are part of the replacement group will be notified directly by email and will maintain full access to campus services throughout the transition period.
As the replacement program rolls out, students may have questions about whether their card needs to be replaced, how to use the new tap-enabled card, the option to have a preferred first name printed on their card, or pickup timelines. Sharing this update broadly supports consistent information across campus and a smooth transition for students over the coming months.
The new tap-enabled student card supports tap access on Kingston Transit, enhances card security, removes the need for annual stickers, and maintains all existing card functionality. The program is jointly coordinated by Housing and Ancillary Services and the Office of the University Registrar.
As part of this project, Queen’s will begin printing preferred first names on student cards. Students will be invited to update their preferred name in SOLUS before their new card is printed. This change reflects an important update to student cards going forward and, for some students, meaningfully supports identity, belonging, and day-to-day interactions across campus.
Faculty codes will also be removed, allowing students to use the same card throughout their time at Queen’s.
What students can expect
