The Department of Geography and Planning is pleased to announce that Dr. Chris Omelon has been granted tenure and promoted to the rank of Associate Professor. Jointly appointed in the Department of Geography and Planning and the Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering, Dr. Omelon has established an outstanding record of achievement across teaching, research, and service.
An exceptional and deeply committed educator, Dr. Omelon has made significant contributions to both large foundational courses and specialized, field-based learning. Students consistently praise his clarity, enthusiasm, and mentorship, noting the transformative impact of his teaching and supervision. His excellence has been recognized with the 2024 John G. Freeman Faculty Excellence Award.
Dr. Omelon’s research program in Arctic geomicrobiology and environmental change is internationally recognized for its innovation and impact. His leadership in long-term Arctic research and strong record of publication and funding have positioned Queen’s as a hub for northern research.
A dedicated and collaborative colleague, Dr. Omelon has also provided meaningful service at all levels of the university and beyond. This promotion reflects his exceptional contributions and bright future at Queen’s.
