The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers a Minor in Latin American Studies (SLAS) that reflects the goals of Queen’s Global Engagement Strategic Plan by encouraging students to build global awareness and engage meaningfully across cultures. Open to students from all disciplines, the minor invites them to explore a region of deep historical and contemporary relevance while developing a broader, more interconnected perspective on the world.
The program includes two core courses—Introduction to Latin American Cultures (LLCU 248) and The Latin American Diaspora in the US and Canada (LLCU 311)—which examine cultural histories, artistic exchanges, migration, and the lived experiences of Latin American communities across borders. Students also complete two Spanish or Portuguese courses, strengthening their ability to communicate and connect in diverse cultural contexts.
A wide range of option courses allows students to explore topics such as history, literature, music, film, and politics across Latin America. With its flexible and interdisciplinary structure, the minor supports Queen’s commitment to global learning by helping students deepen their understanding of Latin America while engaging with its transnational and diasporic connections in thoughtful and informed ways.
As part of the minor, students can also consider spending a semester or two in a Latin American country.
