Hanna Harper

  • Hanna is a third-year Linguistics major.
  • She grew up in Whitby, Ontario speaking English but has also spoken French as a second language her whole life with her family in Québec and in French Immersion.
  • She has learned a bit of Italian since coming to Queen's and hopes to learn many more languages in the rest of her time in university!
  • She is currently exploring options for continuing to study Linguistics in post-grad education.
  • Outside school, she loves reading, writing and music. She is looking forward to meeting everyone in LING 100 this year!"

Calla Johnston

  • Calla is a third year Linguistics major from Orillia, Ontario now living in Amherstview just outside of Kingston. 
  • Her passion for language has always existed, especially in high school where she took three years of Latin and participated in Latin club and Classics Conference. She came to Queen’s with the intention of majoring in Political Studies, but when she took LING 100 in first year as an interest course, she immediately knew it was the perfect major for her.  
  • She is still figuring out what she wants to do after her undergrad, but is considering careers in Law, Speech Pathology and Education.  
  • She only speaks English fluently, however, she enjoys taking language courses and took French all throughout high school and has taken courses at Queen’s in both Spanish and German and intends to continue with Latin as well. 
  • In her second year, she joined the LLCU DSC (Department Student Council) working on an events team to plan and execute events for students within the department. 
  • She is very excited to be a TA for LING 100 and share her passion for linguistics and education with other students! 
     
Calla Johnston

Sam Williams

  • Sam is a fifth-year Linguistics major from Cobourg, Ontario. 
  • He speaks English and French, is learning Spanish, and desires to learn more languages in the future. He took French Immersion from JK to grade 12 and has taken FREN 118 and FREN 150 at Queen's to maintain his written and spoken French abilities. He has also taken SPAN 111 at Queen's as a starting point in his Spanish learning journey.
  • Sam began his studies at Queen's as a science student, majoring in Chemistry for the first two years of his degree. While taking LING 100 in his third year, Sam discovered his newfound passion for studying language, which inspired him to change paths and pursue a degree in Linguistics.
  • As a Residence Don, Sam is passionate about leadership and finds joy in assisting first-year students as they adjust to life at university!
  • As he completes his final year at Queen's, Sam is considering what comes after graduation. He is exploring careers in the fields of Speech-Language Pathology, Education, Translation, and Research.
  • Sam looks forward to sharing his love and passion for leadership, teaching, and LING 100 with everyone this year!
