In this course, we will be exploring a wide range of philosophical issues. The course consists of several units, two in the fall semester and three in the winter. Each unit focuses on a single area of philosophy. The first unit is the philosophy of religion, where we will ask whether God exists. Once this unit is concluded, we will spend the rest of the fall semester doing ethics. The main question here concerns the source of ethics. We will study three prominent and incompatible answers to the question. In the winter semester, we will begin with metaphysics, where our main question will be whether we have free will. Then we turn to epistemology, where we will investigate the source of our knowledge. The final unit is on political philosophy. Here we will examine the limits of state authority (when can the government make its citizens do things they don't want to do?) as well as the best form of government.
