While research at the institute is already underway, this event marks its formal inauguration and celebrates its growing community of research, innovation and partnership. The day will feature opening remarks and presentations, followed by lunch, and the MAX-Nuclear Annual Research Day in the afternoon.
Guests will have opportunities to connect with researchers, students, and industry partners while learning about advances in nuclear materials research. Join us as we celebrate this milestone and look ahead to the future of nuclear research at Queen’s.

Meet our guest speakers

Felix Hofmann
Felix Hofmann is Professor of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford. His research focusses on understanding the evolution of materials in extreme environments, such as irradiation, high or low temperature and hydrogen, with a particular focus on the behaviour of crystal defects. His group extensively uses and develops synchrotron X-ray techniques, micro-scale thermal transport measurements, advanced electron microscopy tools and insitu experiments. To gain mechanistic understanding, these experiments are combined with simulations ranging from atomistic to continuum scale. His research has focussed on tungsten and steels for fission and fusion environments and more recently on materials for hydrogen fuel systems. He has served on beamtime allocation panels at DLS and at the ESRF, and currently co-chairs the later. Together with colleagues from UKAEA and MIT he hosts the “International Nuclear Engineering Colloquium”, a monthly fully-online seminar series, which regularly draws a worldwide audience of 200+ expert participants. In Oxford he is the incoming director of graduate studies and previously served as deputy director of graduate studies and finals examiner. He is a college lecturer at Trinity College, Oxford.

William Cook
William Cook has been a Professor of Chemical Engineering at UNB since 2004, serving as Department Chair from 2019 – 2024, and Director of UNB’s Centre for Nuclear Energy Research (CNER) since 2015. Dr. Cook is recognized internationally as an expert in power plant chemistry control, corrosion monitoring and corrosion mitigation, specifically for nuclear power systems. Research interests and expertise include the use of high temperature and pressure test systems that simulate the operational conditions in fossil boiler systems, conventional and advanced Generation IV nuclear power reactors and Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technologies. Most recently, he has led the expansion of the CNER team and direction in incorporating advanced SMR research areas into CNER’s portfolio and has successfully advocated for and sparked the expansion of nuclear engineering curriculum within the Faculty of Engineering at UNB.
