On September 2, 2019, the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts at Queen’s University will launch a new major cello competition for Canada, the BADER AND OVERTON CANADIAN CELLO COMPETITION. The competition will be held May 6-9, 2020 at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts (“the Isabel”) in Kingston, Ontario. The Bader and Overton Canadian Cello Competition has been made possible through the generosity of the Isabel Bader Fund, A Bader Philanthropy, whose vision, imagination and generosity will enable gifted emerging musicians to learn, inspire, perform, and develop their careers.

FIRST PRIZE: The first prizewinner will be awarded The Marion Overton Dick Memorial Cello Prize for $20,000 CAD, a future engagement to perform with the Kingston Symphony, and a future engagement to perform a recital at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts that will be recorded by CBC Music for national broadcast.


SECOND PRIZE: The second prizewinner will be awarded The Clifford Overton Prize for $6,000 CAD.


THIRD PRIZE: The third prizewinner will be awarded The Marg Foster and Heather Dick Prize for $4,000 CAD.


THE BADER FAMILY AUDIENCE PRIZE:  On Saturday, May 9 after the three finalists perform, the audience will vote by ballot for their favourite player of the evening. The votes will be tallied and checked, and the audience favourite prizewinner will be awarded the Bader Family Audience Prize for $1,000 CAD.

The inaugural YGK Emerging Musicians Competition seeks to inspire and support Kingston’s rising musical talent, and provide excellent tools for a musical career launch for talented emerging musicians.

Kingston has a fabulous music scene and we are here to help emerging musicians put their best foot forward, to share their talents widely, and launch themselves with professionally produced tools. A prize pack valued at $7500 will be awarded to each of five finalists, as determined by a Jury.  

This Competition is in collaboration with the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts at Queen’s University. The YGK Emerging Musician Competition is generously supported by Ballytobin FoundationVenture Club, and Kingston Economic Development Corporation.

Finalist Video, Recording, and Photography Day: Saturday, August 17, 2019
Finalist Showcase Concert: Friday, September 20, 2019 at 7:30PM

Non-refundable application fee: $40 CAD

For the purposes of this application, groups with 2–5 members should select one representative to apply on their behalf. Solo artists will apply on their own behalf.  


  • Emerging musicians*, 18 years or older
  • Canadian citizens and/or permanent residents of Canada
  • Candidates who reside in the City of Kingston or within 50 kilometres of Kingston’s borders
  • Candidates specializing in any musical genre, including candidates from diverse Indigenous and visible minority communities, are all welcome and strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Solo musicians and groups with two to five musicians in their band/ensemble.

*For the purposes of this Competition, "Emerging Musicians" refers to musicians who aspire to a professional concert or recording career. As an emerging musician, you:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to devoting more time to musical activity.
  • Are involved in the local Kingston music community.
  • Are unsigned to a major record label. Entrants who are on independent labels, their own label, or no label are eligible to enter.
  • Self-identify as an emerging artist.

Participants must submit one ORIGINAL WORK for Jury consideration.


Five finalists will be selected by a jury of local industry experts and key community members. Each of the five finalists will receive the opportunity to:

  • Professionally record one song/piece at the Isabel*
  • Create a one-camera performance video of the Finalist's original work*
  • Create a professional media PR kit*
  • Have professional photography taken for promotional use*
  • Perform at the Isabel in a Showcase Concert with the other chosen finalists
  • Be promoted in the Isabel's media and social media campaign, as well as on the Isabel website
  • Be featured on the Isabel webpage for one year
  • Enjoy a 1-year Hotel Desk Membership with Kingston's Venture Club perfect to support entrepreneurial and self-promotional efforts

*The Artist will own the rights to these products with the acknowledgement of the contribution of the YGK Emerging Musician Competition and the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts.
