Teaching Assistantship Vacancies – Department of Global Development Studies

Sandra McKay (PhD Candidate) has published an article "Critical minerals or criminal miners? The (in)formalization of artisanal and small-scale copper mining in Peru," in The Extractive Industries and Society. 

Chantel Brayall (MA), a graduate student from the Department of Global Development Studies, received the Dean's Award for their work on Social Justice. 

The award was presented by Interim Dean Bob Lemieux at the recent annual Dean's Awards Reception, which honours graduate students from each department in the Faculty of Arts and Science for their academic excellence.

Dr. Marcus Taylor will moderate a special UC3 Queen's Event: Communicating Climate Research in an Uncertain Climate on Wednesday, October 29th, 2025 @ 4:00-5:30 PM (Zoom).

Climate researchers face new and daunting challenges communicating their work to communities, students, media, and policymakers in uncertain times. Hear from three researchers in the US, Canada, and Mexico who will share insights about rising above common obstacles in climate research communication.

The Department of Global Development Studies congratulates Hannah Ascough on successfully defending her Doctor of Philosophy dissertation entitled, “Interruptive Imaginaries: Crises, Care, and Communication in South Africa’s Climate Movement" on Thursday September 16, 2025.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the untimely death of Yesutor Gbewonyo, and share our condolences with her grieving family. Yesutor was a brilliant, and ebullient student in our MA program.

The School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs (SGSPA) has awarded Dr. Susanne Soederberg, Professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Just and Inclusive Cities, the 2025 Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Supervision. 

The Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Supervision is given annually to two Queen's University faculty members who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to graduate student supervision.

Dr. Soederberg has supervised 30 MSc, 13 PhD, and 6 postdoctoral fellows in her 21 years at Queen's. 

The Department of Global Development Studies congratulates Vikas HK for being one of the 2024/2025 recipients. 

The Brian Yealland Community Leadership Award is presented to students who work with, and encourage, local youth who are experiencing social, behavioral, economic, or other challenges by helping them realize their worth as individuals and their potential to achieve. It was created in honour of Brian Yealland, Chaplain at Queen’s University for 32 years.
