In 1982, the HBSC study is initiated by researchers in England, Finland, and Norway.

In 1983-1984, the first survey is undertaken in 3 European countries.

In 1985-1986, the four-year cycle begins.
1985/86
In 1989, Canada joins the HBSC network, with Dr. Allan King as principal investigator.
1989
In 1989-1990, Canada carries out first national data collection in concert with 11 other countries.
1989/90
In 1993-1994, Canada carries out its first national data collection and dissemination activities on the four-year cycle. The Canadian team also leads international reporting efforts.
1993/94
in 1997-1998, Canada carries out national data collection and dissemination activities on the four-year cycle.
1997/98
In the 2000s, HBSC conceptual framework evolves to further incorporate social determinants of health.

In 2001-2002, Canada carries out national data collection and dissemination activities on the four-year cycle.
2001/02
In 2005-2006, Canada carries out national data collection and dissemination activities on the four-year cycle, as well as in 2009-2010.
2005/06
In 2006, Dr. Will Boyce becomes the principal investigator.
2006
In 2010, Dr. John Freeman and Dr. William Pickett join the HBSC team as co-principal investigators.

In 2013-2014, Canada carries out national data collection with subsamples to support P/T reporting, as well as in 2017-2018 and 2021-2022.
2013/14
In 2017, Dr. Wendy Craig joins Dr. William Pickett as co-principal investigator.

In 2025, the HBSC network reaches over 50 member countries.
