Survey Development

The HBSC questionnaire and study protocol for the upcoming survey cycle is developed by the international network, based on consultations with each of the provinces and territories, the Canadian HBSC Research Network, of as well as youth themselves.

Data Collection

The survey is administered in classrooms across Canada with the help of teachers and school administrators. Students spend about 45 minutes to an hour completing the questionnaire on paper or online. In 2022, over 25,000 Canadian youth took part.

Data Analyses

In consultation with provinces and territories, as well as youth advisors, the HBSC team analyses the collected survey responses into important findings related to a wide variety of physical and mental health as well as understanding the family, peer, school, and community contexts of children and youth.

Disseminating Findings

The HBSC team collaborates closely with partners like the Public Health Agency of Canada, provincial and territory Health and Education Ministries and Departments, and youth advisors to ensure that study findings are accessible and useful for policy makers. Participating schools are provided with a report of the findings from their students in an accessible report. Further, the Canadian HBSC Network and other collaborators contribute to the scientific knowledge base in their respective fields through academic research and publications.
