Sexual Psychophysiology Testing Room

sexual psychophysiology testing room

This image shows one of our two sexual psychophysiology testing rooms. Individuals taking part in our studies involving vaginal and/or clitoral photoplethysmography, penile plethysmography, or thermography (all described in the Equipment page) would complete the study in one of these rooms.

These rooms both lock from the inside. When alone in this private room, participants undress from the waist down and position themselves in the comfortable, reclining chair. If the study involves a vaginal, clitoral, or penile gauge, the participants would then attach the gauge themselves.

During a typical testing session, participants view and/or listen to sexual and non-sexual stimuli (e.g., pictures, audio narratives, or videos) on the TV screen and/or with the headphones (shown here on the arm-rest of the chair) while their physical and mental responses are measured. Participants use the keypad attached to the arm-rest of the chair to respond to these stimuli. Throughout the course of the testing session, the participant can communicate with the experimenter, who is in another room down the hall, using a hands-free intercom system.

All surfaces that participants come into contact with in this room are disinfected after each use (this includes the recliner, keypad, headphones, etc.) and the sheets and towels are laundered after each use.

Eyetracking and Cognitive Study Testing Room

Eyetracking and Cognitive Study Testing Room

This image shows our eyetracking and cognitive study testing room. Individuals taking part in a study involving eye tracking (described in the Lab Equipment page) or a cognitive task, such as responding to a target presented on a computer monitor while reaction time is measured, would complete the testing session in this room. The eyetracking station is on the left hand side of the image and the cognitive study station is on the right.

During a testing session, the participant is alone in the testing room and guided through the study by an experimenter in a separate room, by means of an intercom system.
