About the Rector

Owen Crawford-Lem

Owen Crawford-Lem was elected the 38th Rector of Queen’s University on March 21st 2022, and took office May 1st 2022 for a 2 year term ending in 2024. 

Born in the Kootenay mountain range in British Columbia, Owen moved to Toronto when he was 3 and has been an avid Raptors, Jays, and Leafs fan ever since. In his 5th year as a Political Studies Major, and Sociology Minor, Owen has held roles within the Arts and Science Undergraduate Society, and leadership roles in the Queen’s Sustainability Conference, and the Queen’s Student Alumni Association. When he can’t be found in his office in LaSalle, a good guess would be Common Ground Coffee house in the Queen’s Centre where he spends most of his free time. As Rector, Owen is one of 3 students elected to the Board of Trustees, an official observer of the Senate, and a trusted voice when advocating for students at an administrative level and beyond.

Niki Boytchuk-Hale

Niki Boytchuk-Hale, was elected the 39th Rector of Queen’s University during the election for Rector held February 6-7, 2024 and will take office May 1, 2024.

Niki came to Queen's in 2019 from Tkaronto and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art in 2023. She is now pursuing a Bachelor of Education in the Indigenous Teacher Education Program, with teachables in grade 7 - 12 Visual Arts and First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Studies. In September 2024, Niki will begin a Master of Education with research focused on the course, Expressions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Cultures (NAC10) using Indigenous research methodologies.  Niki's first campus job was working for Studio Q, where she fell in love with graphic design. Her passion expanded over the years into marketing, communications, and policy, as she took on jobs as the Director of Marketing at the AMS, Brand Communications and Insights Intern with University Relations, and most recently she is doing special projects for the Sexual Violence Prevention & Response department. 

Niki is an inclusive, action-oriented, and people centered leader. She believes the best decisions are made by diverse groups of people and will work to make Queen's a better place by collaborating with students to co-create outcomes with shared benefits and establish mutual responsibilities between students and the administration.

Niki is dedicated to using this position to connect, advocate, and inform through her commitment to communication, wellbeing, and collaboration. While in office, her goals are to enhance the feedback loop between the Rector and students, improve the holistic safety of students, and amplify student advocacy efforts.
