From Discovery to Impact: Exploring Commercialization and Ventures at Queen’s

Kingston Innovation Week is bringing together innovators, researchers, students, industry partners and ecosystem leaders to celebrate innovation and explore how ideas move from discovery to real-world impact.

To kick-off the week for Queen’s University, we invite researchers, students, industry partners and innovation ecosystem supporters from across the Kingston region to join us for an engaging panel of researchers who have successfully navigated the journey from research and discovery through commercialization, venture creation and real-world impact. The panel will be moderated by Jessie Kubes, Assistant Vice-Principal, Economic Development. Following the panel discussion, there will be an opportunity for audience questions and informal networking.

The Partnerships and Innovation team will be there to connect with researchers and students to discuss how they can advance their commercialization goals.

Panelists:

James Fraser (Laser Depth Dynamics/IPG Photonics)

Dr. Fraser’s research has had considerable impact on industry. He has six issued patents and he co-founded Laser Depth Dynamics, a university spin-off, purchased by IPG Photonics Inc., which is currently undergoing rapid growth in Kingston.

Irsa Wiginton (mDETECT)

Dr. Wiginton is the co-founder and Chief Development Officer with mDETECT, a Queen’s university spin-off specializing in liquid biopsies in the detection and treatment of cancer.

Tim Smith (Octane)

Dr. Smith is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Octane. His journey began in 1988, when he led a commercial biomaterials research collaboration with University of Toronto and Queen's University, at a time when industry-academia partnerships were uncommon and undervalued.
