All U.S. federal funding opportunities are posted on Grants.gov. You can use this page to search for funding opportunities and filter results by research area or granting agency. Note that every funding opportunity has specific eligibility criteria – before applying, make sure you meet these requirements.
The most common granting agency Queen's researchers apply for is the National Institutes of Health (NIH). For specific information on NIH, please refer to Queen's NIH webpage.
Our team of Research Projects Advisors can help ensure your application meets guidelines, work with partner universities to complete required documentation, and provide an administrative review of your application.
Make sure to contact us early to receive support:
-
If your are the principal investigator (PI) in the project, contact University Research Services two to three months in advance of the submission deadline.

What you need to know
Institutional requirements: Queen's meets the institutional requirements for participating in U.S. Federal grants (i.e., Queen's is registered in SAM, and has UEI and EIN numbers). Queen's researchers do not have to register as individuals in any of these systems. Applicants will require an eRA Commons ID, which can be created by University Research Services.
U.S. single audits: In order to comply with U.S. federal grant regulations, Queen's has external audits completed yearly.
Indirect costs: Queen’s has a federally negotiated Indirect Cost Rate Agreement. The rate and eligible expenses to be included in the calculation vary based on the U.S. funding agency and location of research. Please contact a Research Projects Advisor for the most up to date rates to include when completing your budget.
Faculty remuneration: Full-time faculty members are not permitted to receive salary as income from sponsored research operating grants while concurrently receiving a full-time institutional base salary covering a 12-month period. When considered an eligible expense by a funding agency, requests for faculty member salary on research grants would be directed towards the faculty member’s Department/School or Faculty. Read the procedure on Faculty Remuneration from Sponsored Research Grants.
Sub-recipient arrangements: If you are the nominated PI and have co-applicants from other institutions, they will be required to provide documents as part of a subproject agreement with Queen’s. Please contact a Research Projects Advisor for more information.
Disclosure requirements
U.S. federal grant regulations require the disclosure of all sources of research support, foreign components, and financial conflicts of interest by all senior/key personnel named on a grant application. These disclosures are made prior to grant submission, and throughout the duration of the award.
Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI)
All senior/key personnel named on the grant must complete the following FCOI forms prior to grant submission, and yearly if awarded, in order to comply with U.S. Federal financial conflict of interest policies. These forms will be kept on file at Queen’s.
Disclosure and Consent Form for Significant Financial Interests (PDF 376 KB)

Current and pending support
All senior/key personnel named on the grant must disclose all previous (past five years), current, and pending research support (including in-kind), indicating whether there is any overlap in funding with the proposed project. All senior/key personnel must also list all affiliations and scientific appointments, both domestic and foreign, including academic, professional or institutional appointments. This document is referred to as “Current and Pending Support” for Department of Defense applications.
Malign Foreign Talent Recruitment Programs
U.S. Federal applicants and grant holders are prohibited from providing funding to or making an award of a fundamental research project proposal in which a covered individual is participating in a malign foreign talent recruitment program (MFTRP) or to an institution that does not have a policy addressing malign foreign talent programs. Refer to the following documents for more information:
Queen's Net ID required to access.
PIs can expect to be asked to certify that they are not a party to a MFTRP at several stages of the grant lifecycle and transfer payment agreement. PIs are also expected to disclose all foreign supports and affiliations for senior/key personnel under “Other supports” on Biographical sketch CVs and other support declarations.
