Sustainability Working Group


I. Mandate

To provide strategic direction and recommendations for the evaluation, planning, development, communication and implementation of initiatives aligned with the university’s sustainability goals and the carbon reductions targeted by the Queen’s University Climate Action Plan.

  1. To provide advice on major areas of focus regarding sustainability and the reduction of the university’s carbon output. Preliminary themes include:
  • Energy and Infrastructure
  • Waste
  • Transportation
  • Community engagement, education, outreach, awareness and partnerships
  • Responsible Investment
  • Climate
  1. To identify and communicate actions required for the university to achieve its sustainability goals and create a sustainability culture.
  • Champion advancing research and pedagogy on sustainability
  • Provide recommendations to develop a communication strategy that will increase awareness
  1. To receive, assess, discuss, review, and make recommendations regarding proposals and development planning that will support the achievement of sustainability and carbon reduction targets at Queen’s University.

II. Roles & Responsibilities

The working group shall fulfill an advisory role and as such will review and provide advice to the administration regarding projects, initiatives and policies that relate to sustainability and achieving the carbon reductions targeted by the Queen’s University Climate Action Plan, and to create a sustainability culture at Queen’s.

The co-chairs, the Vice-Principal (Finance and Administration) and the Deputy Provost (Academic Operations and Inclusion), will provide updates to the Vice-Principals' Operations Committee (VPOC) on the work of the Sustainability Working Group.

III. Duration of Membership Term

The membership term for staff and faculty is three years. All appointments are renewable for a second term.

The membership term for students is one year. All appointments are renewable for a second term, subject to students’ availability.

IV. Subject Matter Experts

Based on the current agenda topics, the committee may call in subject matter experts to help inform discussions.

VI. Meeting Schedule

Meetings are held approximately four times annually. Upcoming scheduled meetings are as follows:

Members of the Queen's and Kingston communities are welcome to join the meetings as guests or observers. Please contact us to RSVP at least one week prior to the scheduled date if you are interested in attending a meeting.
