Further Information

The study of Spanish and Italian offers students the opportunity to develop and improve their linguistic skills, to acquire literary knowledge and appreciation, and to sharpen their awareness of divergent cultural traditions. The Department offers minor, medial and major concentrations in Spanish, and a minor concentration in Italian. Courses in these languages may also be used as electives in other degree programs. Major and medial students in Spanish are strongly encouraged to spend their third year at a Spanish speaking university where they can obtain up to 4 transfer-credits.

The Department offers Spanish and Italian at the introductory, intermediate and advanced level. Students who have no previous knowledge (or minimal knowledge) of Spanish or Italian enter into the introductory courses (-010*, -112*), while students with 4U or equivalent enter into the intermediate courses (-204*/-205*). If students are fluent in Spanish or Italian or have studied either language at another university, they are placed in the advanced 300-level courses.

Graduates from our programs have applied their skills in such careers as language teaching, commerce, marketing, business administration, international banking, government, development agencies, international relations, law, engineering, music and the arts. Students can use Spanish or Italian courses toward the completion of an International Studies Certificate.

High School Background Required

No specific high school course is required to pursue a concentration in Spanish or Italian.

Note: Students with 4U Spanish or Italian (depending on which language they wish to concentrate in), or equivalent, may enter the program at the second-year level
