Biology (BIOL)

Biology:  What BIOL course should I take?

The Department of Biology offers a number of first year courses.  Your choice of course depends on your background, interests, and what subject you may wish to study in upper years.

BIOL 102/3.0     Introductory Biology of Cells

     and

BIOL 103/3.0     Introductory Biology of Organisms

BIOL 102/3.0 and BIOL 103/3.0 are the pair of first year courses that introduce you to the study of Biology at the university level.  While a Grade 12 Biology background is not required, students should have at least one of Grade 12 Physics, Biology or Chemistry.  Any student interested in pursuing Plans in the following subjects should register in this course:  Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Computing, some  Environmental Science students (see I Want to Study...Environmental Science for details), and Life Science.  It is an elective for students intending to pursue any other science subject, or Kinesiology.  Students taking Art History and who may wish to pursue Art Conservation at the graduate level may wish to consider this course, bearing in mind the enrolment restriction.

BIOL 110/3.0     Human Genetics and Evolution

BIOL 110/3.0, when offered,  is used as an elective course by upper-year students who are not currently, and have not previously, studied Biology.  First year students should not enrol in this course.

BIOL 111/3.0     Ecology and the Environment

BIOL 111/3.0 is a course on Ecology and the Environment.  Amongst first year students, it is taken primarily by students who wish to pursue Environmental Studies Plan in upper years, or who intend to take certain Environmental Science Plans (see I Want to Study...Environmental Studies or ...Environmental Science for details).  It is also used as an elective course by upper-year students.  If you are intending to study Biology, Biochemistry, or Life Science in upper years, you should not take this course in first year.

SECTIONED COURSES:  These courses are offered in more than one lecture and tutorial section.  When you register, you must choose the lecture and tutorial sections that best suit your timetable.

REGISTRATION RESTRICTION:  Priority access to Science students during the July 14th - 27th Enrolment period.  They will become available to all students during the Open Enrolment periods between July 28th and August 1st and then again on September 3rd, as space permits.  BIOL 102/3.0 is a prerequisite for BIOL 103/3.0
