Alternative Payment Arrangement (APA) Program

The Alternative Payment Arrangement Program (APA) assists students who cannot meet their tuition and SAL fee payment deadlines, but have a proven source of funding. The APA allows students, upon approval, to defer payment of their tuition and SAL without penalty.

How the Alternative Payment Arrangement (APA) Program works
Submitting an APA request
APA requests must be sent from your @queensu.ca email address and must include your student number (note:  there is no APA form required).
Deadline for submissions
  • APA requests can be submitted for both fall and winter terms any time after July 15.
    • Fall term: APA requests due August 15
    • Winter term: APA requests due December 15 (requests for winter terms can be made at the same time as for fall term as long as the winter term source of funding is known)
  • APA requests received after the due dates will be processed on a best-efforts basis only, with no guarantee of approval
Automatic approvals
  • Students will be granted an APA automatically if you have:
    • applied for OSAP for 2016-17 and have received an assessment
    • received (Out-of-province) Provincial/Territorial government assistance last year (in 2016-16) at Queen’s
    • applied for US Government Loans for 2016-17
Do NOT submit an APA request if...
  • You have received your OSAP assessment for the 2016-2017 Academic Year
  • You received Provincial/Territorial Government Assistance (Out of Province) while attending Queen’s last year (2015-16)
  • You have applied for US Government Loans for the 2016-2017 Academic year

DO submit an APA request if you will be receiving...
Provincial / Territorial Government Assistance (e.g. Out of Province)
  • If you did not receive Provincial / Territorial Government Assistance (e.g. Out of Province) last year in 2015-16 at Queen’s (e.g. entering students), send a copy of your funding assessment (Notice of Assessment) to awards@queensu.ca to have your tuition and SAL fees due dates deferred:
    • Fall term: Notice of Assessments due August 15
    • Winter term: Notice of Assessments due December 15
Scholarships / Awards External to Queen's

Send your award letter to fees@queensu.ca

  • Fall 2015 term: award letter due August 15th
  • Winter 2016 term: award letter due December 15th
Third-Party Funding (e.g. foreign governments, corporations, band funding, etc.)

Send your sponsorship letter to fees@queensu.ca . For information on what the letter needs to include, see Pay by Funding Agency.

  • Fall term: sponsorship letter due August 15th
  • Winter term: sponsorship letter due December 15th
Extenuating Circumstances

If you have extenuating circumstances that will prevent you from paying your tuition by the tuition due dates, you may request an APA. For example, if you can pay most of your fees by the deadline, but not all (e.g. receiving final summer employment pay cheque after deadline). Provide details of your circumstance in an email and send to fees@queensu.ca.

  • Fall term: APA request due August 15th
  • Winter term: APA request due December 15th
How can I tell if my APA has been approved?

The due date of your tuition and SAL WILL CHANGE in SOLUS. To check if you have an approved APA, check your SOLUS account on August 13th, or five business days after you’ve submitted your request, whichever is later. If the due dates have not been updated by August 22nd, contact solus@queensu.ca.

What happens if I can't pay my Tuition and SAL by the due date(s) or have not been granted an APA?

If you don’t have an APA, your tuition is due September 1 for Fall term and January 10 for Winter term. If your payment is not received by the due date, you may be subject to the following:

  • A late fee will be applied to your account;
  • You will not have access to Open Enrolment to add or swap your courses; and,
  • Service charges will be applied to your account.

If you DO have an APA, your tuition is due September 30 for Fall term and January 31 for Winter term. If your payment is not received by the deferred due date, you may be subject to the following:

  • A late fee will be applied to your account;
  • You will not have access to Open Enrolment to add or swap your courses; and,
  • Service charges will be applied to your account.

Note, as soon as Queen’s receives payment for the outstanding amount or is provided a proven source of funding (e.g. Notice of Assessment – out of province government assistance), the enrolment hold will be lifted, but the late fee and any service charges will still apply.
