Building on Queen’s commitment to inclusive excellence, this series will bring together faculty, staff, students, and administrators to reflect on the pedagogical, practical, and cultural dimensions of accessibility. By amplifying the experiences and expertise of leading scholars, educators, and community members, CTL aims to cultivate more equitable learning environments where all members of our community feel a sense of belonging. The series will showcase leading voices in disability studies, inclusive teaching, and community-based accessibility initiatives.

Disability Needs to be Decolonized: How Indigenous Knowledges Can Inform Inclusive Pedagogies of Practice

As principles of Indigenization, decolonization, reconciliation, and EDI continue to inform the strategic directions and priorities of universities across Canada, it is imperative the perspectives and aspirations of individuals directly affected by university policy and practice are meaningfully represented. In this talk, Dr. Rheanna Robinson will draw on her experience as an Indigenous scholar that lives with chronic illness and disability to describe how her academic research within Indigenous Disability Studies represents a compelling example of how Indigenous knowledges offer the world meaningful representations of equity and inclusion in diverse and varying ways.

Rheanna Robinson is the Associate Professor at Department of First Nations Studies, Faculty of Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences and Humanities at University of Northern British Columbia. Dr. Robinson is an Indigenous (Métis) scholar and a member of the Manitoba Métis Federation. She has expertise in Indigenous Education and Indigenous Disability Studies and is guided by relationship and the Four R’s (Respect, Relevancy, Reciprocity, and Responsibility). She is also Co-Lead at Indigenous Research Stream, Canadian Institute of Inclusion and Citizenship, University of British Columbia.

Accessibility Café: Reflecting on Ideas shared by Dr. Rheanna Robinson

Join Equity and Accessibility Services from the Human Rights and Equity Office (HREO) for the first Accessibility Café of the 2025-2026 academic year, held in partnership with the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and the Office of Indigenous Initiatives (OII). This informal session invites participants to reflect on the ideas shared by Dr. Rheanna Robinson in her talk “Disability Needs to Be Decolonized: How Indigenous Knowledges Can Inform Inclusive Pedagogies of Practice.

Co-Facilitators: Roberta Bighetty, Misty Underwood and Al Doxtator from the Office of Indigenous Initiatives

By rotating through three discussion stations, participants will explore colonial legacies in accessibility, the role of Indigenous knowledges in inclusive pedagogy, and pathways for institutional change at Queen’s.

If participants prefer to attend online, they will discuss the same themes in breakout rooms and record their insights and discussion on a Miro board.

The Café is open to all members of the Queen’s community and will be offered in-person and via Zoom.

This workshop represents a rare opportunity for senior administrators to reflect on key human rights, equity and inclusion concepts as well as the importance of these concepts to university administrative functions. Both parts 1 & 2 of this training are mandatory for senior administrators (grades 10 and above).

It is open to all members of the Queen’s community—students, staff, faculty—to anyone who wants to support the celebration of sexual and gender diversity at Queen’s, regardless of how they themselves identify in terms of gender identity or sexual orientation. The goal of the Positive Space Program is to make campus a safer and more affirming place for 2SLGBTQIA+ students, staff, faculty, and guests. 

To become a participant and post a sticker, you need to complete a self-paced course and attend an in-person or virtual session. You can arrange to have an in-person or virtual session presented especially for your group by completing the Training Request Form.

Employment Equity Representative for Faculty Hires (Faculty)

This training is mandatory for faculty members, who are designated as the Employment Equity Representatives (EE Reps), on Appointments and/ or RTPC committees as mandated by the by the Collective Agreement between Queen’s University Faculty Association (QUFA) and Queen’s University at Kingston. The EE Rep is responsible for ensuring that Committees adhere to obligations and expected practices with respect to equity-related decision making, data collection, and reporting to Equity Services and senior administrators. The EE Rep plays an important role in ensuring fairness as well as identifying and challenging barriers to the recruitment and advancement of equity-seeking group members.

Audience: Mandatory for faculty members that are serving as the Employment Equity Representative on appointments or RTPC committees.
