KGU-CCC Certificate

The Cross-Cultural College Certificate is a great way to enhance your transcript. A major advantage of the Cross-Cultural College Certificate is that most of the required courses are the same as those which, depending on their plan, you would normally take to fulfill your degree requirements at Queen's.

Requirements

Certificate requirements consist of at least 18.0 units of courses taken from the following thematic areas:

Group A: Multicultural Issues and Theory (3.0 units)

This group of courses concentrates on multicultural issues and theory and/or examines particular regions or global phenomena dealing with multicultural dynamics.

Group B: International Relations Issues and Theory (3.0 units)

This group of courses concentrates on International Relations issues and theory, and/or looks at particular national or global situations.

Group C: Cross-Cultural College Core Courses (3.0 units)

All students participating in the KGU Cross-Cultural College must take one (or more) of the courses from the Summer programs or the Global Career Seminar option during the Fall and Winter terms. Academic credit will be awarded for all courses taken as part of the KGU Cross-Cultural College.

Group D: Cross-Cultural Skills and Knowledge Content (9.0 units)

This group of courses should have cross-cultural focussed skills and knowledge content. For Japanese students, English language ability is emphasized along with Canadian Studies courses. In the case of Canadian students, some Japan/Asia content courses and Japanese language courses are encouraged.

Extra courses taken from Group A, B and C can be counted towards Group D. Courses can be used for both the KGU certificate and your Queen's degree.

Other Eligible Courses

Please note that these are not exhaustive lists, and that courses not listed may still be eligible for the Certificate:

  • For Group A, courses that look at ethnocultures, ethnicity, diaspora, human rights, and transnational communities.
  • For Group B, courses that examine globalization, international law, economics relations, and diplomacy.
  • For Group C, no substitutes are allowed.
  • For Group D, Japanese language courses, Japanese/Asian studies courses. Extra courses taken from Group A, B and C can be counted towards Group D.

If a course is not listed in the curriculum chart posted above, however you feel fits into one of these categories, and/or you are unsure if it is eligible for the Certificate, please contact us at ipo@queensu.ca.

Application

To qualify for the certificate, you must complete courses from all of the 4 groups listed above. There is no stipulation as to what disciplinary perspective is taken, but ideally Canada, Japan, Asia and Pacific regions would be focussed on in part or in full. Courses taken prior to registration in the CCC program can be counted for Certificate requirements (subject to approval by the IPO). Extra courses taken from Group A, B and C can be counted towards Group D.
