On September 8, The Guardian published an opinion piece that had been written by a robot -- a computer running a deep learning program, or an AI. Queen's philosopher Catherine Stinson was interviewed on CBC Radio's Ontario Morning (the story starts at 35:35) to talk about the piece. Although the AI-authored article is very impressive, Stinson suggests that it still shows some of the weaknesses of AI: It's 'riffing' on existing writing, but in uncreative ways. She imagines that if humans all stopped writing for the internet, and let artificial agents take their place, the writing would very quickly get stale.
