The Professor H.R.S. Ryan Scholarship

The Professor H.R.S. Ryan Scholarship was established by the 1968 graduating class to honour Professor Ryan of the Faculty of Law. It is awarded to the student with the highest standing in Evidence.

Your commitment to this scholarship not only rewards academic excellence but also inspires the next generation of legal professionals to reach their full potential.

Reunion: Celebrated our 50th Anniversary on the weekend of September 13-15, 2019.

Class Goal: In 2009, we launched a campaign to raise funds for The Professor Hugh Lawford Memorial Fund in memory of Professor Emeritus Hugh Lawford, a beloved former colleague and teacher at Queen’s Law and founder of QUICKLAW. In recognition of Professor Lawford’s distinguished career as a teacher and innovator, the Fund was established to support classroom renewal projects at the Faculty of Law, including the use of state-of-the-art computer and learning technologies, and the 2010 renovations to the Faculty’s four major basement classrooms. $94,988 was raised and our class is currently recognized on the second level of the class giving wall.

To commemorate our 50th Reunion, please consider making a donation to the Queen’s Law School Fund or the Dean Bill Flanagan International Studies Award.  Contributions to either fund will count towards our class gift initiative.

The Experiential Learning Fund

As we mark 55 years since graduating from Queen’s Law, this milestone reunion is both a chance to reconnect and an opportunity to give back to the next generation of students.

This year, the Law’70 class giving campaign will support the Experiential Learning Fund, which helps ensure that Queen’s Law students gain valuable, hands-on legal experience through placements, internships, and clinical programs. These opportunities enhance students’ legal education while providing important services to individuals and communities in need.

In 2015, during our last in-person milestone reunion, members of Law’70 contributed $40,990 to Queen’s Law. This year, we invite the class to meet or exceed that total.

Every contribution makes a difference — whether you’re making a first-time gift, renewing your support, or considering a future gift through your estate. Your generosity helps create opportunities for today’s students and strengthens our Queen’s Law community.

The Vic Freidin, Law’71 Memorial Award 

To commemorate Vic Freidin, who organized every class reunion we have all enjoyed, and to celebrate our reunion, we launched a class gift campaign to establish a student award in Vic’s memory.

We are pleased to announce that the “Vic Freidin, Law’71 Memorial Award” has now been established. The award will be disbursed annually to a student enrolled at Queen’s Faculty of Law on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic achievement and demonstrated interest in advocacy. Thank you for making this possible.

The Class of Law '72 is celebrating their 50th reunion in 2022! In honour is this, the Law 1972 Award has been established. The fund is awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in any year of the J.D. program and combined J.D. program in the Faculty of Law.

This year, we are focusing our efforts on achieving a high rate of class participation and to raise additonal funds to the Law 1972 Award. Affordable education is essential to ensure all prospective students have access to the Queen’s education, experiences, friendships, and community. Every gift counts!

Class Fund: Fred Delaney’s Last Pro-Bono Award

Fred Delaney, BCom '72, Law '75, practiced law for 34 years in Gananoque and became its mayor in 1985 serving for three terms. His philosophy of life was: "you have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you. It isn't always about the money; it's about looking after one another.” As a result, Fred did a lot of pro bono work hoping it would somehow help others achieve their goals.

The Fred Delaney's Last Pro Bono Award will create a legacy for Fred and help students attend Queen's to study Commerce or Law in order to reach their goals.

The Law’77 Memorial Award is awarded to students in their first or second year of studies primarily on the basis of financial need, with demonstrated involvement in student activities and academic achievement. Since its inception, 18 deserving students have benefited, and the fund has disbursed $71,550 (as at April 30, 2021).

In honour of our upcoming 45th reunion in 2022, we have made a friendly amendment to our class award in memory of classmates who have passed away. With the depletion of Government funding and the rising cost of tuition and living expenses, ensuring that quality legal education remains within reach of promising young adults regardless of their individual financial background, is increasingly important.

By focusing our efforts on achieving a high rate of class participation between now and 2022, we do hope to raise at least $100,000 of additional funding. Affordable education is essential to ensure all prospective students have access to the Queen’s education, experiences, friendships, and community. Every gift counts!

Reunion: Law'79 celebrated their 40th reunion at Homecoming in 2019. It was a great weekend and a wonderful opportunity to catch up and reconnect with classmates.

In 2014, to commemorate our 35th anniversary, we launched a class gift campaign to support clinical programs at the law school, all of which have been consolidated into a single downtown space .This new consolidation with improve access to justice for Kingston-area low-income residents and the student learning experience.

As we mark 45 years since graduating from Queen’s Law, this milestone reunion is both a chance to reconnect and an opportunity to give back to the next generation of students.

Although there are many giving opportunities, we have highlighted three which we think might be of most interest.

1. Law’80 Visiting Lecturer in Business Law

This endowed fund supports high-profile speakers in business and international business law, enriching the student experience and fostering academic excellence. Funds cover expenses, honoraria, and travel associated with hosting these visiting lecturers.

2. Queen’s Faculty of Law Bursary (Student Need)

Financial support can be the deciding factor in whether a student thrives. On average, 30% of Queen's Law students receive limited need-based financial aid, while more than 65% rely on federally funded loans to finance their education. This bursary helps students focus on their studies, not financial stress, making legal education more accessible and inclusive.

3. Experiential Learning Fund (Queen’s Law Clinics)

Queen’s Law Clinics provide hands-on training for more than 200 students each year, supporting over 1,200 client files across five clinics: Queen’s Legal Aid, Business Law, Elder Law, Family Law, and Prison Law. These clinics serve low-income communities while equipping students with essential legal skills.

Introducing the Law 1982 Bursary

Established in honour of their 40th reunion, the Law 1982 Bursary is an endowed fund awarded based on demonstrated financial need to law students with preference given to Indigenous students.

With the diminishing role of Government funding and the rising cost of tuition and living expenses, ensuring that quality legal education remains within reach of promising young adults regardless of their financial capacity is increasingly important. The opportunity to learn at a university like Queen’s is often not available to communities and families that do not have the financial resources. This is particularly true in some of Canada’s indigenous communities. The Law 1982 Bursary will help to make the law school more accessible.

Donations of any size are welcome and can be made with a single payment gift or a multi-year pledge with payments spread over a maximum of 5 years.

The Mary Alice Murray Student Lounge Fund

As is traditional during a reunion year, we intend to make a class gift. In recognition of our 40th Reunion, we will champion one of the Law School’s priorities and focus on a contribution to the renovation of the Mary Alice Murray Student Lounge. The lounge is in dire need of significant repairs, with an estimated cost of $200,000. Its state of fun is in disrepair, too as alas, there is no shuffleboard table!

Rather than a specific fundraising target, we are targeting participation by at least 84% of our class. Donations of any amount from 110 people is what we aspire to. Giving is easy, tax-deductible and can be spread over time if you like. A gift of $1984 spread over 5 years is less than $40 per month. Our class has been extraordinarily generous in the past, and this is our chance to make one more lasting contribution to student life. Make your gift today.

The Mary Alice Murray Student Lounge Renovation Project - Your support will transform the Mary Alice Murray Student Lounge with contemporary furniture, an upgraded kitchen, enhanced technology, and a redesigned alumni area, all while repairing and refreshing its overall look.

Law 1989 – Halldor K. Bjarnason Bursary

Established by Halldor K. Bjarnason, Law’89, the Law 1989 – Halldor K. Bjarnason Bursary is awarded based on demonstrated financial need to students in any year of a J.D. degree program or a combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law. Preference will be given to students with disabilities and students who are single parents.

With your support, the Class of Law 1989 can lead the way in supporting law students with disabilities by removing financial barriers and providing access to an unparalleled legal education. The result will be a new generation of Queen’s Law graduates who are the long-term stewards of the ideals of this institution, its principles, and its commitment to advancing access to justice, public service, and legal excellence.
