Alumnus Receives Award For Excellence In High School Teaching

A Kingston high school teacher is among four recipients of the 2012 Baillie Award for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching from Queen's.

Alumnus Todd Kartye, Artsci'93, Ed'94, teaches chemistry at Bayridge Secondary School and was nominated by three of his former students, who are graduating this month from Queen's in engineering, nursing and science.

Established by Chancellor Emeritus A. Charles Baillie, the award recognizes secondary school teachers who pass on to their students a life-long desire to learn and inspire them to pursue their goals in higher education.

"Teaching is so much more than the delivery of knowledge. Igniting a passion and helping students to identify their capabilities is a great reward," says Todd. "As a mentor and teacher it is wonderful to know that I have provided a positive influence. I truly feel a sense of pride that former students have been successful and that I played an inspirational role in their academic pursuits."

Todd will receive his award at one of his nominator's convocations on June 8.
