Queen’s University’s 175th anniversary celebrations are going international. Next stop – Hong Kong.
Alumni, academic partners, students, and prospective students in the Asia-Pacific region are invited to a series of celebrations on May 20 – including a gala evening at The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong featuring Queen’s Professor Emeritus and Nobel Laureate Dr. Arthur McDonald – in honour of the university’s historic milestone.
“Queen’s has strong ties with Hong Kong. The city is home to one of our most engaged international alumni branches and many academic and research partners. I am looking forward to reconnecting with fellow alumni and friends of Queen’s in the region and continuing to build Queen’s international partnerships,” says Principal Daniel Woolf, Artsci’80.
The day will feature several special events. In the afternoon, a convocation-style ceremony will recognize alumni amidst friends and family, and long-time Queen’s volunteer and retired Judge of the High Court Kin Kee Pang, Arts’70, will be presented with an honorary degree. The event will also welcome incoming students – the class of 2021 – to Queen’s. Following the afternoon activities, the formal evening Gala reception and dinner will feature keynote speaker Dr. McDonald, Principal Woolf, and Chancellor Jim Leech, MBA’73. Black tie is optional and Queen’s jackets are welcome.
The trip is also an opportunity for alumni in the Asia-Pacific region to connect with each other and with Queen’s senior leaders to help advance the university’s international aspirations.
“For some alumni, it has been decades since they have been on campus in Kingston, so the 175th celebrations are a chance to rekindle our tricolour spirit by meeting with fellow Gaels and senior university leaders, to share our experiences, perspectives and our love for Queen’s,” says Edmond Chan, Artsci’97, executive committee member of the Alumni Association’s Hong Kong Branch.
