We are very pleased to announce that Dr. Meena Krishnamurthy will be joining the Department of Philosophy at Queen’s.
Professor Jackie Duffin, Hannah Chair in the History of Medicine at Queen’s from 1988 to 2017, has been inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. Jackie, who is cross-appointed to Philosophy, has combined her training as a physician and historian to engage ground-breaking and infectious historical research.
Queen’s University recently awarded its highest research honour to Professor Ram Murty, cross-appointed between Mathematics and Philosophy. Recipients of this honour are internationally recognized for contributions to their respective fields of study.
Professor Margaret Moore has been selected as a 2019 recipient of the Queen’s University Excellence in Research Prize, the highest form of research excellence recognition at Queen’s.
Congratulations to Cheryl Cline, who was nominated for the 2019 Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching – a nomination that is itself a recognition of her excellence. Cheryl is Director of the Office of Bioethics, and is cross-appointed to Philosophy. She has been recognized for her superb teaching in the past, winning a fellowship in educational scholarship, and several other awards.
Jon Miller was invited to be a visiting scholar at New York University-Abu Dhabi in April and May 2019. NYUAD is one of three NYU campuses around the world which are full degree-granting institutions, the other two being NYU Shanghai and the original NYU in Manhattan. Previous holders of the prestigious position offered to Miller include Julia Annas, Quassim Cassam, Laurie Paul, and Kyle Stanford.
Recent PhD Jason Millar has been appointed Canada Research Chair in the Ethical Engineering of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Ottawa. This chair will enable Jason to further develop his interdisciplinary research, bringing ethics and policy considerations to bear on the engineering of emerging robotics and AI.
Nancy Salay has been appointed incoming Editor of Dialogue: Canadian Philosophy Review, the official journal of the Canadian Philosophical Association. Dialogue is a broad journal, open to all branches of philosophy, which makes the job as Editor a challenging one. In her new role, Nancy has exciting ideas about how the journal can draw on the vitality
Recent Queen's PhD Yual Chiek has just accepted a permanent position at St John's University in NYC. He will be an assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy there, starting on September 1. Yual works on Early Modern Philosophy, focusing especially on the ideas of compossibility and pre-established harmony in the work of G.W.F. Leibniz. He has co-edited two volumes and has published a number of articles and chapters on these topics.
