An article in the Globe and Mail focuses on the Prison for Women and the work of the P4W Memorial Collective. The site was recently bought from Queen's University by a developer. The P4W Memorial Collective, which includes Philosophy Department members Jackie Davies and Lisa Guenther, is trying to ensure that there is a physical memorial to recognize the history of the site and the many women who were sentenced to terms in the prison.
Paul Fairfield’s two new edited collections —Relational Hermeneutics: Essays in Comparative Philosophy and Hermeneutics and Phenomenology: Figures and Themes—are now published by Bloomsbury. Both books are co-edited with Saulius Geniusas.
The School of Graduate Studies has announced the winners of the Queen's Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Supervision. The two winners are both members of the Department of Philosophy: Christine Sypnowich, current Head of the Department, and Ram Murty, Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and cross-appointed into Philosophy.
In the past two years, the Department of Philosophy has added three permanent faculty: Daryn Lehoux, Lisa Guenther, and Elliot Paul. We'll introduce each of them over the coming months, starting with an interview with Daryn. Daryn works in the History and Philosophy of Science, and has written extensively on Ancient science. He's been in the Classics Department at Queen's for a decade, but now has a joint appointment with Philosophy.
In a two-part series, philosopher Lisa Guenther introduces the Prison for Women in Kingston, Ontario and how its history – as the former home of hundreds of incarcerated women, and the site of unethical human experiments and other forms of prisoner abuse — is woven into the civic life of Kingston, raising challenging questions about the future of the property.
Udo Schüklenk was nominated for the Frank Knox Teaching Award for his PHIL 157 (Moral Issues) course. The Frank Knox Teaching Award is the highest honour that the Alma Mater Society bestows upon faculty in the Queen’s Community.
Just out is a new volume edited by Christine Sypnowich and Andrée-Anne Cormier, Family Values and Social Justice. The volume contains chapters that respond to a book by Harry Brighouse and Adam Swift, Family Values.
Professor Rahul Kumar was interviewed on the radio programme and podcast, Philosophy Talk, about what we owe future generations. Is it possible to have obligations to people who are not yet born? Can people who do not exist be said to have rights that we should respect? And if they do, what do we do if our rights and theirs conflict?
PhD student Michael Tremblay was interviewed on Ideas on CBC radio. Ideas is focusing on some interesting Canadian PhD students, and were keen to interview Michael both for his research on the Stoics and for his impressive achievements on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Michael explicitly connects the two: "Epictetus says explicitly that philosophy is like wrestling." As for philosophers, wrestlers improve by continually challenging themselves, and confronting strong opponents.
Into the Coast is a series of interviews with academic philosophers, inspired by past philosophical series, such as Michael Chanan's Logic Lane. In the past year, two Queen's University philosophers have been interviewed: Christine Sypnowich and Henry Laycock.
