STEWART, Alec Thompson - 89, of Kingston, Ontario, died peacefully July 28, 2014 at Kingston General Hospital. Alec was born June 18, 1925, in Windthorst, Saskatchewan, son of Arthur Stewart and Nell (Thompson) Stewart, and older brother of Donal Stewart.

Alec graduated from Dalhousie University and then Cambridge University. He inspired many students and colleagues during his long career as a scientist at Chalk River Laboratories, and as a professor of physics at Dalhousie University, the University of North Carolina, and Queen's University. His contributions to the scientific community were honoured in 2001 when he became an Officer of the Order of Canada.

In 1960 Alec married Alta (Kennedy) Stewart. They had a long and happy marriage, and together they raised three sons. After losing Alta to cancer, Alec later married Annabel (Wenzel) Stewart in 2004. Alec and Annabel enjoyed 10 wonderful years together. Alec will be remembered with much love by his beloved wife Annabel. His gifts of wisdom and love will be treasured by his sons James, Hugh, and Duncan, and by their families. His gentle good humour will be fondly remembered by his step-daughters Elizabeth, Margaret, and Rosemary, and by their families.

All will be welcome at a memorial service to be held at the Queen's University Club, 168 Stuart St, Kingston, Ontario, at 2:30pm on September 6, 2014. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Alec's memory to a charity of your choice.
