Supporting your child's transition to high school
What is the STEPS Parents Program?
The STEPS Parents program is for parents and/or guardians of grade 7 and 8 students with learning disabilities and/or ADHD across Ontario. Based on the parent component of RARC's long-running STEPS (Successful Transition from Elementary to Post-Secondary) program, STEPS Parents will offer parents this same valuable content in a virtual format.
The goal of the program is to provide parents:
- Information and support to understand their child’s experience and potential more fully
- Skills to navigate the school system
- Ability to provide timely and targeted support
- Support to know they are not alone.
The program will consist of 4 weekly virtual sessions on Tuesdays (Jan. 23, 30 & Feb. 6, 13, 2024) from 6:00-7:30 pm. Registration closes January 9, 2024.
If you are located in the Kingston area and are interested in you and your child participating in the in-person STEPS program, please visit the STEPS program page for more information.
History of STEPS
The STEPS program was developed by the RARC team at Queen's University. STEPS was initially designed to target and address areas that research has shown are problematic for students with learning disabilities as they make the transition from elementary to post-secondary school. The program has evolved over the past twenty years to include students with ADHD. Based on the success of this program and to improve outcomes for students and families across Ontario, we have developed a virtual, parent/gaurdian-only program, "STEPS Parents".
