This table summarizes 25 pilot & seed grants in the health sciences. Pilot and seed grants are normally funds targeted at projects of a short duration (1-2 years). Often, these awards are aimed at research ideas that are still at their initial stages. They may not yet have preliminary or published data supporting them. 

This document is intended to serve as a planning document. Not all of programs summarized below are open and accepting applications. Researchers can, however, use this table to identify possible sources of funding and plan accordingly.

CIHR  Catalyst Grants Targeted research areas

  • Duration: Generally 1 year
  • CIHR periodically offers 'catalyst' grant competition to support targeted areas of health research. A full list of current CIHR competitions is available on ResearchNet 
CIHR  Planning & Dissemination Grants Planning meetings or knowledge translation activities
  • Generally $10,000-$20,000
  • Duration: 1 year
  • CIHR usually holds two planning grant competitions a year, with deadlines in August-September and February-March. The grants are aimed at supporting team meetings or KT activities that align with the research interests of participating CIHR institutes .
