Mile in Their Shoes participants with Indigenous guides and Knowledge Keepers at in-person day in 2023

A Mile in Their Shoes 2026

Toronto, ON

Join one of Queen's most meaningful lifelong learning experiences with this special hybrid learning opportunity. Developed by Queen's Office of Advancement in partnership with the Office of Indigenous Initiatives, A Mile in Their Shoes invites a small cohort of Queen’s alumni to deepen their understanding of Truth and Reconciliation through guided learning, personal reflection, and authentic engagement with Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, community members, and fellow alumni.

Registration numbers for this program are intentionally limited to preserve the intimacy of the cohort and create space for meaningful dialogue, reflection, and relationship-building.

In-person learning

The September 21 in-person learning experience is a core component of the program and is required to complete the certificate. Guided by Indigenous facilitators and Knowledge Keepers, you will engage in ceremony, storytelling, discussion, and experiential learning at the Six Nations of the Grand River, with visits to the Mohawk Longhouse and other locations that reflect the spirit and purpose of Reconciliation.

Online coursework

The online portion of the course features learning modules that you can tackle at your own pace from the course launch through the end of December. Through the course materials, you will learn about and reflect on Indigenous history, cultures, the lived experiences of individuals placed in residential schools, and pivotal moments in the lives of survivors and victims.

Shared reflection

Alongside the online coursework, there will be two virtual group sessions for reflection and discussion on the materials. These sessions will build on the in-person day discussions and the course materials to further deepen your understanding of Indigenous history, experiences, and Reconciliation.
