Benefactors Stu and Kim Lang honoured for their leadership

Stu, Sc’74, and Kim Lang, Artsci’76, are the recipients of the major U SPORTS award for leadership they have provided to their community and their continued contributions to Queen’s.

They couple received the 2022 U SPORTS-Mitchell Family Alumni of the Year. The annual award celebrates former varsity athletes who have become leaders in their communities and recognizes the continued contributions of each alum to their alma mater.

Stu and Kim Lang have been long-time champions of their alma mater, Queen's University. They have donated more than $70 million to both Queen's and the University of Guelph, benefiting student-athletes and the general student populations. At Queen’s, their contributions include a $10-million founding gift to revitalize Richardson Stadium.

Stu was a star receiver with the Golden Gaels from 1970-74 and a member of the Queen’s Football Hall of Fame. He also played in the Canadian Football League and helped Edmonton win five Grey Cups during his career. Stu went on to coach the University of Guelph football team. Kim serves on the Ontario Veterinary College Pet Trust Board and is the former artistic director for the Eden Mills Writers Festival near Guelph.

"Stu and Kim Lang have repeatedly demonstrated their extraordinary commitment to Queen's University in cultivating excellence for the student and student-athlete experience," says Linda Melnick, Executive Director, Queen's Athletics & Recreation. "Their contributions to the revitalization of Richardson Stadium, and the Richardson Stadium Pavilion Project, have helped provide best-in-class facilities for our varsity programs and created a transformative connection between the University and the broader Kingston community. I'd like to offer my congratulations to Stu and Kim on behalf of Queen's University and Queen's Athletics & Recreation for this well-deserved recognition, and my sincere thanks for their unwavering dedication to empowering student athletes, both on and off the field of play, and supporting opportunities that contribute to the well-being of our campus"

Stu and Kim established a registered charity, the Angel Gabriel Foundation, and together have donated millions to many causes. The foundation supports what the Langs refer to as “the three As” – athletics, academics, and animal welfare.

“Both Stu and I are fairly privileged … to have wonderful upbringings, and my parents certainly emphasized the idea of giving back and of service,” Kim said in a 2018 article in Grand magazine.
