Special Diet Options

Queen's offers a number of sustainable and special food diet options on campus for students, staff, and faculty dining with food allergies and other dietary needs. 

Hospitality Services does not have allergen-free facilities. Anyone with food allergies and other dietary needs are encouraged to 'Ask Before They Eat' while noting, dining halls do offer greater control to limit cross contamination of ten of the most common food allergens over retail locations.

Ban Righ and Leonard dining halls offer a dedicated 'true balance' station with chefs on-site to assist with personalized & customized dietary accommodations. Upon request, Jean Royce Hall chefs can also provide customized meals and prepare 'true balance' recipes.

Dining Hall food stations includes a menu board with 'Contains and May Contain' statements identifying Health Canada’s priority allergens: milk, eggs, soy, sesame, peanuts, tree nuts, mustard, fish, shellfish, wheat, sulphites, and gluten.   

Retail food locations do not have menu boards with ‘Contains and May Contain’ statements. If you elect to dine at retail food locations, onsite supervisors, managers or chefs can provide you with access to ingredient information to help you decide on a case-by-case basis if your dietary needs could be safely accommodated.  Menu selections, ingredients, and suppliers are subject to change at any given time.  

Ask Before You Eat - speak with a chef, manager or supervisor about safe dining options, to review menu ingredients, or if you require customized meal preparation on separate equipment in the back of house. 

Look for icons on menus, identifying vegetarian, vegan, plant-forward, no dairy, no gluten, sustainable seafood, Eat Well™, and halal offerings. Learn about how we engage in sustainable sourcing.

Vegan

- foods made from plant-based ingredients only. Vegan diets exclude eggs, milk, and dairy products, honey and other animal-derived ingredients 

Vegetarian

- foods that fit a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet that exclude meat, fish, and poultry, but include eggs, honey, milk and dairy products 

No Dairy

- made without milk ingredients  

No Gluten

- made without gluten ingredients  

Halal Protein Only

- Residence Dining Halls: contains certified Halal proteins and excludes haram ingredients

- Retail Locations: contains certified Halal proteins

Sustainable Seafood

- ingredients that are third-party certified as sustainably sourced 

Eat Well

- menu items that meet specific criteria around calories, fat, sodium, and whole grains that make a better-for-you option

Plant-Forward

- contain 2 oz (60 g) or less of animal-based protein per serving. Note: Menu items that have this icon may or may not be vegetarian. Vegan items are plant forward 

Coolfood Meals

- Coolfood Meals identify recipes 
with a low climate impact. They 
meet criteria for reduced 
greenhouse gas emissions and
nutritional quality. 

Please Note: Cooking equipment, such as charbroilers, deep fryers, and flattops are shared at retail food locations (exceptions apply) and therefore cannot be guaranteed allergen-free. Speak with a supervisor, manager, or chef to inquire about special diet meal preparation.

It is important to speak with a chef before each meal selection to ensure additional precautions are taken when preparing your meal to reduce risk of cross-contamination.

Queen’s Hospitality Services does not have a Kosher kitchen. Meals can be requested to be prepared using additional precautions with select ingredients that arrive onsite, packaged, with Kosher certification, as per the manufacturer label. However, without a Kosher kitchen (and the relevant kashrut supervision), none of these items can be considered Kosher once they have undergone preparation of any kind.

Build Your Own Sandwich Station

  • Sauces: mayo, horseradish mayo, yellow mustard

Build Your Own Salad Station

  • Dressing: toasted sesame, hot sauce, oil and vinegar upon request
