Please note the information below is reflective of our academic term operations. If you are dining with us as a group guest this summer and have questions pertaining to your food allergy and dietary needs, please contact event.services@queensu.ca.


The true balance menu items found in Ban Righ and Leonard are always the safest option for those with allergies and dietary needs. True balance recipes are available at Jean Royce dining hall upon request. Each food station includes a menu board with 'Contains and May Contain' statements identifying Health Canada’s priority allergens: milk, eggs, soy, sesame, peanuts, tree nuts, mustard, fish, shellfish, wheat, sulphites, and gluten. If you are dining at Lazy Scholar, Location 21, Wally’s, and flip!t, onsite chefs can help answer any questions.

Vegan

- foods made from plant-based ingredients only. Vegan diets exclude eggs, milk, and dairy products, honey and other animal-derived ingredients 

Vegetarian

- foods that fit a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet that exclude meat, fish, and poultry, but include eggs, honey, milk and dairy products 

No Dairy

- made without milk ingredients  

No Gluten

- made without gluten ingredients  

Halal Protein Only

- Residence Dining Halls: contains certified Halal proteins and excludes haram ingredients

- Retail Locations: contains certified Halal proteins

Sustainable Seafood

- ingredients that are third-party certified as sustainably sourced 

Eat Well

- menu items that meet specific criteria around calories, fat, sodium, and whole grains that make a better-for-you option

Plant-Forward

- Coolfood Meals identify recipes 
with a low climate impact. They 
meet criteria for reduced 
greenhouse gas emissions and
nutritional quality. 

Please Note: Cooking equipment, such as charbroilers, deep fryers, and flattops are shared at retail food locations (exceptions apply) and therefore cannot be guaranteed as allergen free. Ask Before You Eat - speak with a chef to discuss special diet meal preparation. Upon request, meals can be produced on separate equipment in the back of house.

Vegan / Vegetarian

  • Plant-based entrees are offered daily at all meal periods. Look for the vegan or vegetarian wellness icons at all food stations for options. Ban Righ and Leonard have dedicated vegan stations, and you'll find options at many food stations in the dining halls.
  • Salad bar includes plant-based protein options and select vegan dressings (including oil and vinegar upon request)
  • Vegan options at the deli such as hummus, tofu spread, and vegetables – Leonard – sandwich feature
  • Visit the milk alternatives fridge for:
    • Vegan butter and/or mayonnaise
    • Vegan yogurt
    • Dairy free cheese
    • A selection of dairy free milk alternatives, which may include: soy, rice, almond, or oat milk

Menu items displaying the halal icon contain third party certified halal proteins verified by The Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of Canada and/or other certifying bodies.

Entrées with the halal icon in residence dining halls do not contain haram ingredients and contain certified halal proteins.

Select retail food outlets display the halal icon for certified halal proteins.

No Gluten

We have measures in place for students with celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, and gluten intolerance. Students with Celiac Disease are encouraged to speak to the chef at each visit to ensure precautions are taken to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.

 Please note: Our facilities do not have a dedicated gluten-free toaster in retail settings (dining halls excluded).

Ban Righ and Leonard:

Aside from the true balance station, items at other stations may be free from gluten-containing ingredients. Review menu boards for Contains/May Contains statements and look for the No Gluten wellness icon. Remember to Ask Before You Eat.

  • Breakfast: daily hot breakfast entree (includes pancakes, waffles, French toast, etc. on rotation – one of these is available on request daily). Ban Righ - call ahead for gluten-free all-day breakfast options. 
  • All French fries are gluten free. Fries at Ban Righ are cooked in a deep fryer dedicated to fries only.
  • When stir fry is on rotation, a gluten free option can be prepared upon request. Speak with a chef.
  • Sandwich toppings (selections may include): deli meats (turkey, ham, roast beef, egg salad, tuna salad, hummus)
  • Dressings (selections may include): balsamic, Italian, house-made vinaigrette
  • These options can be prepared, upon request. Please call 30 minutes before arriving to reduce wait times.
    • Gluten-free pasta (ie. quinoa and brown rice)
    • Grilled cheese
    • Gluten-free pizza (Leonard only)
  • Soup and/or chili on rotation (request from chef/manager for back of house product to reduce risk of cross contamination)

Jean Royce:

  • Hot breakfast entrée available upon request daily (ie. waffles, bacon)

  • When stir fry is on rotation, a gluten free option can be prepared upon request. Speak with a chef.

Select Kosher Ingredients

Queen’s Hospitality Services does not have a Kosher kitchen. Meals can be requested to be prepared using additional precautions with select ingredients that arrive onsite, packaged, with Kosher certification, as per the manufacturer label. However, without a Kosher kitchen (and the relevant kashrut supervision), none of these items can be considered Kosher once they have undergone preparation of any kind.

Special dietary accommodations are available to meal plan holders during periods of strict observance (ie. Passover). Meet with the Registered Dietitian to discuss dietary accommodations at any point throughout the year.
