I began my journey at Queen’s as a computing student but the elegance of pure mathematics quickly drew me in. With the exemplary math faculty and tight-knit student community, a passion for mathematics ignited within me which led me to pursue a double major in computing and mathematics.
Pedagogy and instructional excellence are the central pillar of the undergraduate math curriculum at Queen’s. The department has developed and organized courses to guide the students towards understanding rather than superficial knowledge. During my time working at the math help center, I have seen first hand the transformative effect the analysis sequence has had on students, as they went from their initial frustration to annoyance at the repetition to epiphany, acquiring mathematical maturity in the process. Moreover, the math faculty is incredibly understanding and supportive of students. Blending in just the right amount of analogies and intuition without sacrificing rigor to cultivate deeper understanding without being overwhelming. From integral and differential calculus in first year to the graduate core algebra courses I took in fourth year, I have had the pleasure to be exposed to unique teaching styles, meticulously thought-out coursework and new perspectives that all added to my learning.
In completing the undergraduate mathematics program, I have not only acquired a strong foundation in pure mathematics but also developed a personal framework for research and problem-solving as well as a deep understanding of the topics I have studied. It is this understanding and capacity for independent inquiry as opposed to superficial knowledge that will allow me to apply what I learned to tackle novel challenges head-on and go above and beyond whether it is in the industry or academia. I am thankful for the new horizons the undergraduate mathematics program at Queen’s has unlocked for me.
