Hopefully you are all preparing for a restful break from schoolwork. Many students travel home for winter break, and it is important to prepare your university house/apartment to be empty for potentially multiple weeks. Here are a few good tips to avoid damage to your home away from home!

  • Make sure to lock all doors and windows, shut blinds and have your mail put on hold.

  • Make sure to cancel or pause any food subscription services that you may have during the year to prevent wasted food, and/or animal problems.

  • Turn down your heat to save energy, but not too low that pipes could freeze. See our neighbourhood safety page for more information!

Now that you have lived Off-Campus for 4 months or more, this is a great time to check in with your roommates to ensure that everyone is satisfied with the living environment you have created. Having monthly discussions is ideal, but everyone gets busy with schoolwork and different commitments. Taking the time for a discussion before everyone goes home for Winter break is a great opportunity for everyone to discuss their feelings and frustrations, and for everyone to have some space after the discussion.

We look forward to seeing everyone back on and around campus in January! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to scr@queensu.ca. As exam season comes to a close, we wish you the best of luck with end of year projects and exams!
