As we approach Family Day, a time dedicated to celebrating the bonds of family and the warmth of close relationships, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on the significance of these connections in our lives. For many, family extends beyond blood relations to encompass the found family we create through shared experiences, friendships, and communities. This year, as Queen’s University graciously closes its doors in observance of this special day, it presents us with a chance to embrace the spirit of Family Day by reconnecting with both our traditional and found families. From fitness activities to artistic endeavours, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’re spending the day with loved ones or exploring new connections within your community, let’s dive into the heart of Family Day and celebrate the bonds that bring us together!

Get ready to make the most of Family Day with a jam-packed schedule of fun and active activities at Kingston’s recreation and leisure facilities. On Monday, February 19, the City’s recreation centres will be bustling with excitement, offering a diverse range of programs for all ages and interests. Dive into the day with swimming sessions at Artillery Park Aquatic Centre. If skating is more your style, head over to the INVISTA Fitness & Wellness Centre for free public skating sessions, or lace up your skates for a special Family Day Skate at the CUPE Ice Pad. You can also join in on group fitness classes like Cycle Fit and Zumba or unleash your competitive spirit with family badminton, basketball, and open gym sessions at various community centres across Kingston. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to celebrate with your loved ones and make lasting memories together.

If, like me, you’re drawn more to artistic activities, then step into a world of creativity and fun at the Draw by Night Family Day Event on February 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Hosted in collaboration with the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning, this event is designed to bring families closer through the magic of art. Picture a space filled with tables adorned with paper, waiting eagerly for the touch of pencils, markers, and crayons. With a rainbow of art supplies at your fingertips, the possibilities are endless. From family-friendly coloring sheets to inspiring prompts, there’s something to spark the imagination of artists of all ages and skill levels. Gather your loved ones for a morning of laughter, creativity, and community spirit!

As we embrace the spirit of Family Day, let’s remember that the bonds we share with our loved ones, whether traditional or found, are truly precious. This year, let’s seize the opportunity to reconnect with our families and communities, celebrating through a variety of engaging activities. Whether you're diving into the excitement of fitness and sports or immersing yourself in the world of art and creativity, Family Day offers a chance to make lasting memories and strengthen the ties that bind us.
