Program Overview

This new program is both cutting edge and respectful of the traditional scholarly strengths of gender studies and women’s studies. It encourages interdisciplinary approaches and supports new ways of looking at issues of sex and gender. The dynamic and diverse nature of our program suits the social, cultural and educational needs of local/global societies that are becoming increasingly fragmented and complex. Our areas of focus include:

  • Activism, social justice and political economy
  • Representation, art, popular culture, cultural production and literatures
  • (Post)colonial, migratory and diasporic communities
  • Feminist and gender theories including critical race/anti-racist theory, queer theory and feminist pedagogies.


In addition to acquiring excellent research skills and pedagogical skills through teaching assistantships, faculty research assistantships provide students with unique professionalization skills in areas such as qualitative and quantitative research, conferencing and conference organization, theoretical debate and research, mentorship in journal editorships.

Career paths – employment opportunities

Graduate Students in the program are trained to be equipped in anti-oppression teaching, activist work and performance, grassroots organizing and contributing to women’s and feminist NGOs, as well as other careers that focus on the well-being of Canadians and global communities. The M.A. provides candidates with the expertise to explore future studies such as law, heath, social work, journalism, art, and teaching – with the benefit of confident writing, research and presentation skills and a politicized education.

Funding, Academic Prerequisites & Deadline

Funding Information

M.A: Minimum $13,000, includes Queen’s Graduate Award and teaching assistantship

Ph.D: Minimum $18,000, includes Queen’s Graduate Award and teaching assistantship

We encourage you to apply for additional funding through external scholarships (SSHRC, OGS, etc.). Entering graduate students who win federal government tricouncil awards are  automatically provided a $5,000 top-up award by Queen’s.

Academic Prerequisites


  • A four-year undergraduate degree (BAHon) from a recognized university in gender studies or cognate fields (women’s studies, feminist studies, sexuality studies) or in another field with evidence of a prior focus on gender.
  • A minimum of B+ in the last two years of university study.


  • An MA degree from a recognized university in gender studies or cognate fields (women’s studies, feminist studies, sexuality studies) or in another field with evidence of a prior focus on gender.
  • A minimum of B+ in the last two years of university study.
  • Consideration will be given to practitioners of gender studies in the public or private sectors who hold a BAHon/BA and who demonstrate exceptional and relevant professional experience and achievement in an appropriate field.

Prior to applying, PhD applicants are strongly encouraged to consult with department faculty to learn about their interest or availability to serve as a potential Supervisor. Newly-admitted PhD students are assigned a Supervisor at the time of admission.

  • Writing sample of your strongest work no more than 12 pages long, submitted separately by mail directly to the department
  • An updated Curriculum Vitae (optional)

Test Requirements

For international students, if required, a TOEFL total score of at least 600 (paperbased) or TOEFL iBT minimum scores of: writing (24/30); speaking (22/30); reading (22/30); listening (20/30), for a total of 88/120. Applicants must have the minimum score in each test as well as the minimum overall score.
