Extenuating Circumstances

The Policy on Academic Considerations for Students in Extenuating Circumstances is meant to support students if they experience a circumstance outside their control (e.g., sudden physical illness or mental distress, severe injury to self or significant others, bereavement, traumatic event, etc.) and it will have a direct and substantial impact their ability to temporarily meet essential academic requirements.

If medical or mental health care is needed, students can book a medical or mental health appointment.

Steps to take

  • Students should connect with their Faculty/School about the extenuating circumstance process
  • If supporting documentation is needed, healthcare providers from Student Wellness Services may complete the Verification of Extenuating Circumstance Form for conditions currently impacting students ability to complete academic requirements
  • Students must submit completed documentation to their Faculty/School and contact course instructors to negotiate academic consideration
