Celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day

Update: The Digging Roots performance has been relocated and will take place at Market Square.

The Queen’s and Kingston communities are set to mark National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21 with celebrations in City Park and a free evening concert by two-time JUNO Award winning band Digging Roots.

The university’s Office of Indigenous Initiatives will join other local organizations between 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at City Park, where attendees can enjoy a range of activities, including a sacred fire, community drumming, food and vendors, contests and prizes, children’s games, and more.

Following the day’s events, an evening performance by Digging Roots will take place at Market Square beginning at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free of charge and attendees are asked to reserve their spot in advance.

This year’s Kingston National Indigenous Peoples Day Celebrations have been organized jointly by several local groups, including Kingston Indigenous Languages Nest, City of Kingston, Queen’s University’s Office of Indigenous Initiatives, Limestone District Schoolboard, Sexual Assault Centre Kingston, Indigenous Diabetes Health Circle, the Canadian Institute of Health Research, Kewaywin Circle, and many other community collaborations.
