Transformative gift supports public engagement in SURP
The Department of Geography and Planning has announced a donation of $125,000 from Dr. David Gordon.
A distinguished urban planning scholar, Dr. Gordon is an alumnus of Queen's Engineering (1976) and Queen's School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP 1979). He's also a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Planners and former SURP Director from 2008 to 2018.
The donation establishes the SURP Public Lecture and Events Fund, providing dedicated support for lectures, symposia, panel discussions, and other public events that enrich learning, foster dialogue, and strengthen connections between students, faculty, alumni, planning professionals, and the broader community.
"The main plan is to invite a distinguished planner to Queen's and have a full itinerary for one week, including lectures, workshops, etc.," Dr. Gordon says. "On one of the days, we will go to Ottawa and host an alumni dinner and reception and set it up as a networking and fundraising event for SURP. Our school has a substantial presence in Ottawa, at the City of Ottawa, the National Capital Commission, and all the federal agencies and consulting firms. It will be a great event."
When asked why he wanted to establish the Fund, Dr. Gordon reflects on the start of his journey in academia and he dedication to the university and SURP.
"I've been associated with this school since it was born. I was an undergraduate in 1972, and the school started in 1970," Dr. Gordon explains. "I took courses that were offered by the school because at that time, you could do a minor in urban planning. I'm immensely grateful that I got such a wonderful education here as an undergraduate in civil engineering and urban planning. This school has always been close to my heart."
He adds as a national school in a smaller city it's important to bring outstanding practitioners to the students and faculty in person so they can learn from them. Dr. Gordon said he also wants to host a public lecture and other discussion opportunities here in Kingston.
“Few individuals have had as profound an impact on SURP as David Gordon. Through his years of leadership, scholarship, and mentorship, he has helped build a vibrant and respected planning program. This remarkable gift will create lasting opportunities for students, alumni, faculty, and the broader community to come together and engage with the critical issues shaping our cities and regions. We are deeply grateful for David's generosity and enduring commitment to Queen's,” said Dr. Melissa Lafrenière, Department Head, Department of Geography and Planning.
