The Department of Film and Media’s Certificate in Animation Theory and Practice offers a wholistic approach to animation through equally-weighted emphasis on academic study and technical training. The program promotes active, problem-based learning through hands-on production of animated media in relation to critical analysis of animated media and inquiry into topics within animation studies. Our approach to the study and practice of animation is interdisciplinary: faculty currently engage with animation as it relates to VR, AR, installation, new media, performance, game studies, and curatorial studies. The program balances training in animation tools and techniques and a solid grounding in animation studies that emphasizes the varied contexts for animated media and its overlap with many other disciplines, as well as research-creation methodologies that intertwine creative and scholarly work. The number of animated advertisements, music videos, video games, experimental films, visual artworks, data visualizations, and cinematic visual effects demonstrate the cultural significance of the form, and a wave of technological shifts have led to the more widespread accessibility of powerful animation tools, as well as increased visibility of animated media in the cultural landscape. These shifts in technology facilitate the use of animation for mixed-reality media, live performances, gallery-based artworks, video games, and more. The program aims to create a teaching and learning environment where we might all come to better understand animation’s complex and ever-changing status within the media landscape. |

The Certificate in Law is a 12.0 credit certificate designed to provide undergraduate students with a broad exposure to substantive legal issues that may impact them in their personal and professional lives. The certificate requires that students take four courses, each of which will cover a broad topic of the legal world to generate an understanding for and interest in researching law. Within the general teachings, this certificate will cover the most pressing topics in a student's life such as Canadian, Aboriginal, corporate and workplace law. Building off the already existing LAW 201 'Introduction to Law' undergraduate course offering, this program is designed to generate interest through knowledge in the practice of law, giving students from all streams a general insight into the progression. Through the courses offered, this certificate will assess students based on their depth and breath of knowledge, ability to apply methodologies and their application of course knowledge while also developing their communications skills and developing their professional capacity. Designed for undergraduate students from all faculty streams, this accessible certificate program will require students to complete 4 undergraduate law courses, of which three must be selected from a choice of four courses existing in the Faculty of Law and one course from an eligible list offered in the Faculty of Arts and Science. All of the courses offered by the Faculty of Law will be avaliable online for students of distance studies to access the certificate. The Certificate in Law is only one of three undergraduate law certificate programs in Canada offered by law faculties. It is in its accessibility where the Queen's Certificate in law distinguishes itself from the rest. |
